Texas homeowner fatally shoots man with medical condition who wandered onto porch in middle of night

Texas homeowner fatally shoots man with medical condition who wandered onto porch in middle of night

A Texas homeowner shot and killed a 21-year-old man Monday during an early morning encounter on his front porch.

The shooting occurred in the Fort Worth suburb of Saginaw around 4 a.m. in the 600 block of Babbling Brook Drive, the Saginaw Police Department said. Officers were called to the scene after reports of gunshots.

When they arrived, they found a man deceased lying face down on the porch from what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds. His mother identified him to Fox affiliate KDFW-TV as Andrew Russell.

The homeowner told police he was awakened minutes earlier by someone banging on his front door. The person was asked to leave, which he began to do, police said.

The person who was shot walked away but turned around and "rushed the resident," police said. The homeowner fired multiple shots as he retreated into the home, police said. No charges have been filed.

Russell's mother, Cynthia Williams, told the news outlet her son suffered from epilepsy and frequent seizures for years and likely wandered out of his home and needed help. He has a history of leaving the home after seizures, she said.

Of course, when you own a gun, this option doesn’t come to mind.

5. I don't understand the thinking of some gun owners

The homeowner must have thought the now deceased was a possible threat as he armed himself but then he closed the distance with the perceived threat by confronting him instead of maintaining or increasing the distance. The second error was the homeowner removing the protection a closed door afforded by opening the door to confront the man. If one thinks the situation may involve the use of deadly force, indicated by arming oneself, you don't open the door.

This is,IMO, another gun owner who bought a gun for supposed self protection and didn't get the needed training or put any thought , planning and practicing in dealing with potential threats and the result is just too predictable.

Guns are dangerous and those who own them or even just handle them ought to get training and practice applying that training

They get a gun in hopes of realizing fantasies of killing someone.

... don't let anyone you'd care to shoot live in your head.

If I was the sort who shot strangers on my porch, or even in my house, I'd have quite a long list of them, most harmless, and one or two that deserved to be shot.

But it's been my personal experience that once the guns come out everything is FUBAR. I haven't shot anybody and I don't keep guns handy as some kind of security blanket.

I've had people banging on my door in the middle of the night countless times over the years. About half of them are drunk, some of them need assistance, and some, including cops, are simply at the wrong house.

Tell the guy to leave through the door, then call the cops.

The gun owner put himself in a situation where he was threatened. It is pretty clear he wanted to shoot someone that night...

I used to be a member of NextDoor, I got kicked off because I wouldn't use my real name, but before that I would read message after message of people and their itchy gun fingers. Any time there was someone just walking down the street they were perceived as suspicious and how these "suspicious" people better watch out and don't come to our house or we'll shoot 'em.

It's a joke to them and also not so much. They really are itching to kill people. And they will also offer gun lessons for the ladies. That's right they will help train more irrational mentally and emotional ill people to shoot and ask questions later.
