More Americans Now Socially Liberal Than Conservative For First Time, Poll Finds

Americans are now more likely to be socially liberal than conservative for the first time since Gallup started polling the question in 2001, the pollster reported Thursday, reflecting a broader trend of Americans becoming increasingly liberal on social issues over the past decade—though a far higher share of Americans still hold fiscally conservative views.

According to Gallup’s poll, which was conducted May 3-18 among 1,016 U.S. adults, 34% of adults now identify as socially liberal and 30% as socially conservative, though the largest share of respondents (35%) hold moderate views.

While there have been a few times in the past in which an equal share of respondents have held socially liberal and conservative views, in 2015 and 2018, typically more have identified as socially conservative, with 36% identifying as conservative in 2019 versus 28% as liberal.

While younger Americans are far more likely to identify as socially liberal than older adults, all age groups have become increasingly socially liberal over the past 20 years. Adults ages 18-34 were largely split on social issues in 2001 and are now “substantially” more liberal in 2021, Gallup reports, while 35- to 54-year-olds have gone from “modestly conservative” to “slightly more liberal than conservative.” Those ages 55 and up have become “slightly less” socially conservative, though a majority still hold conservative views. Gallup also notes declines in socially conservative views have been “roughly equal” between white Americans and non-white Americans, though white Americans are still more likely to be both socially and economically conservative..

When I was growing up my dad was a gun-loving, anti-gay, Reagan lover. During GW’s term he started to change, resulting in a vote for Obama in 08 and every Democrat since. Now he’s actually more liberal than me and I’m pretty far left.

This suggests the social narrative is shifting in our favor, too.

Now we “just” have to pack a more potent punch in our messaging to inspire them to get to the polls more reliably. Somehow I’m holding out hope that our leadership is going to get on this.

that media will always try to make Dems be their whipping boy while always giving soft touch lingo to everything the Right Wing says and does, from the rethugs to their trumpcult tools in Congress and the streets.

We have corporate Democrats but they are not out to sabotage democracy like the wholly owned subsidiary of rethugs are.

I say let's just take the oldest, most important polling institution in history and run with what they say about us for a while.

However, we must do what is necessary to get our message through that muck, including honing our messages so that they are pithy and compelling. We have substantive gold, we just don’t have the crucial art of message crafting down.

And it's true that we have to double down because even if we throw diamonds, we know media won't ever give us fair or even coverage.

Gallup just proved that our message is getting out there and working -- thank you, Internet.

Even "gold standard" Pew usually has people self identify, instead of asking questions for experts to determine (far more expensive), and most people really don't know what socially liberal is.

From the 1980s-20-oughts RW manipulators turned liberal into a dirty word meaning LW extremist, with downright whacko and even immoral connotations. Millions of sensible people were affected, and no sensible person would identify as that.

Liberal has become more respectable and more people are identifying as the real thing, but most people still do not know what it means and many feel it's not good even if they can't say why. That's why the libel that liberals want to eliminate police departments can do so much harm today; to some it seems as if it could be credible.

Yet liberal ideas and goals are deeply entrenched in our culture and supported across the ideological spectrum even as most are unable to realize it. Equality of all. Justice for all. Individual rights. Pleuralism. Pretty basic stuff. #BLM. Equitable wages. Universal healthcare for the good of the individual and society. Pre-K to get children off to a good start for the good of the child and society.

How many would recognize government of, by, and for the people as intensely "socially liberal?" It's not gravity. It had to be created out of liberal ideals.

Many people will poll exactly like this, yet that is not what they vote for. Of course the suburbanites will poll as more liberal.

But they vote based on their feelings about the economy, gas prices, crime, borders, education....perception, emotions at a certain point in time.

Covid beat Trump, not his nastiness. Had Covid not happened Trump would have won with a bigger share of the vote than in 2016.

I gave that old Joe Conservative essay to a few of my republican/conservative friends a long time ago & asked them to tell me which side advocated for things like clean drinking water, safe pharmaceuticals, safe working conditions, etc., & then I asked them which of those things they were willing to give up. Not one of them responded. They've been brainwashed to hate democrats/liberals even if democratic/liberal policies make their life easier & better.
