(42,862 posts)And they poop everywhere. And they carry ticks. (The young ones are adorable... so they get points for that.) But after they lose their spots, they're definitely a nuisance.

(58,785 posts)now that we're gone a good part of the year, let them devastate most everything in what was once our garden. And try to be proud that they're so nice and healthy.

(42,862 posts)... to seeing "wild" animals just wander through the yard. You can't actually pet the deer, but they're about as carefree as the squirrels and they'll get just about as close to humans.

(58,785 posts)often hanging in the driveway where two large oaks overhang it, woods they can scamper to on each side. They've gotten used to us using it, and we've learned to slow down when we normally accelerate up a curve because they might be right there. They know us, of course, and a new thing is that they've started taking their own sweet time moving out of the way.

(42,862 posts)... then to see how quickly they start to bounce around the yard. When startled, Momma-deer will snort and stomp her feet, and the young one's understand to immediately drop and lay flat and motionless in the grass to avoid being seen. (But eventually they learn to eat my azaleas, daylilies, tiger-lilies... even the yew shrubs are not safe.
This year wasn't as bad as last year. It's unclear if a lot of them were hit by traffic... or maybe the county decided to cull the herd.
Now I'm reading that deer can catch covid. I just hope they're not spreading it to humans.

They've become arrogant too- often blocking me from entering my house.
This is quite frightening during rut season.

(7,359 posts)...we have an apple tree. Yet to have a single apple off that tree. The deer eat them before we can get to them.

(58,785 posts)standing midstage in our little pasture, but the deer practically climb it to eat the apples, which is funny to watch, and each year bluebird parents teach their babies to fly to and from it from the woods. The rest of the time I try not to see it.

(4,728 posts)Feeding deer makes them dependent on humans,
upsetting whatever balance of nature - or what's left of that.
