Ohio legislature passes congressional redistricting plan giving Republicans a significant advantage

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio’s Republican-dominated legislature gave final approval Thursday to a redistricting plan that would give the GOP a leg up in as many as 13 of the state’s 15 congressional districts.

The redistricting plan, which passed the Ohio House 55-38, meaning under the state constitution they would last only four years before a new plan must be passed, rather than 10 years if the plan drew bipartisan support. Four Republicans, along with all House Democrats present, voted against the measure.

The congressional redistricting proposal, Senate Bill 258, now heads to Republican Gov. Mike DeWine. Even if he signs it, the redistricting plan is all but certain to be challenged in court, as has been the case with redrawn state legislative districts passed by a GOP-controlled redistricting commission about two months ago.

DeWine spokesman Dan Tierney said Thursday evening that the governor won’t issue a statement about whether he intends to sign the bill until his office officially receives it, which could be as soon as Friday.
