(90 posts)I reached the low point when dRump was elected. That is THE low point for me and, so far, nothing else has quite come that close.

(19,204 posts)now, and not just as encouragement to persevere. It's already at that point, so don't go bringing a protest sign to a gun fight.

(31,392 posts)We are living in a very fu*ked up country, full of racists, bigots, misogynists, and armed to the teeth. Looking for any chance to assert white male supremacy, especially using firearms.
It's always been here: the orange one gave these a$$holes permission to act violently on their sick, twisted beliefs, and there are plenty of others happy to help them get away with it.

(718 posts)We simply have to learn to fight like they do. We need to unify and keep pounding their asses.

(9,670 posts)As much as we had hoped that Americans had evolved over the past several decades, it's quite apparent that we have not. There will always be a racist, bigoted, uninformed contingent that devalue life and will take it away from you if they feel like it.
I never once got that feeling living in Europe for 8 years.

It is no big loss. I was getting iritated with all her "I'll pray for you." instead of a simple good bye.

(4,618 posts)Then again, the fire is always burning. Civil rights; MLK, JFK, and Bobby; Nixon and enemy lists; WWII; the Great Depression; WWI - you get the point.
On edit, I skipped over too much: GWB-Cheney and the Iraq War; the trillions wasted on killing in Iraq and Afghanistan; 9-11: December 12, 2000, etcetera.

(40 posts)Starting with Sandy Hook and the rest of your list- I am shaking. The fact that Anthony tried to stop someone who shot someone else and was killed by this coward who claims self defense- IS SICKENING. Anthony was braver than most people- for sure.
Now that our great state of Texas has expanded gun rights to these types of vigilantes, I am not happy. They want that upper hand to intimidate us from speaking up and holding them in check when they are being assholes or for us to be hesitant about attending protests. I am someone who has never shied away from standing up for others in certain situations but I would be weary of becoming the target of one of these cowards with a gun. I don't even put any political stickers on my car anymore because of these unhinged idiots. In the days of bush jr, I used my truck as billboard by writing/drawing my anti -bush and anti- war statements in the dirt and only rarely did I get flipped off. These days, I feel like these cowards with guns are just looking for an incident like little man- boy kyle.
The trial was a ridiculous sham from the beginning. Underage vigilante gets a gun illegally and ends up murdering 2 people. He gets to take 2 lives and not even get have to give up any of his life for it is just wrong. Like you said, it makes me sick to my stomach because it seems not only justice doesn't matter, people are cheering him on for his actions. I think that's the part that just adds to my despair about our future. I feel we are a stone's throw away from the brutal lynch mob mentality in parts of our society.
The only things that keeps me going are my Mom,(most of family is rightwing-love em but don't like them) pets, a few friends, riverlife and the best group of students I have ever had. I do have a lot of hope in them as I see their compassion and they are way more aware than I was when I was a teen.
Peace n love
I also want to say thanks to all of you here. I've been reading your intelligent and heartfelt posts for years. Thanks for keeping me sane and informed.

This punk Rittenhouse - karma will get him. I have to believe that. He has to live with this for the rest of his life. I hope the rest of his life is miserable.

(6,265 posts)have carried the day in the rittenhouse verdict. Yet this is a bellwether of things as they have ALWAYS been in this country. Starting with the killing of Native Americans after 'the first thanksgiving'. The story is bullshit by the way.

(36,478 posts)I feel like I've been on the underdog team my entire life. We've had some wins, for sure. Made progress, for sure. And I came to terms with the fact that you can never let up. Never let your guard down. But recently it feels like we're backsliding. That we're losing. And when I tell myself not to get discouraged, that's what they want, I remember in the background is climate change. It's hard to be optimistic that progress will prevail.
Sending some virtual good vibes your way.
