I could make you guys waste your time by reading a lot of backstory here. Let's cut to the chase.
My sisters and I are now the "older generatiton". The aunts, uncles, and grandparents. I'm the family "lefty". First get together in a couple of years for obvious reasons. The last time was the Kavanaugh hearings. My sisters all have 2 brain cells that rub together, so they're still in the "can form rational thoughts" Republican camp, but still...
So I walk out to the living room in my normal morning pre-coffee fog, and my straight as an arrow, Republican even through Nixon, voted for Trump, brother-in-law has (wait for it) MSNBC on. I tell him I'm surprised, but proud of him, and he says, "They're smart and tell the truth." And then later in the day, we went to a CBD dispensary and got him some stuff for his chronic pain.
The scales are falling, friends. We really need to have confidence and hang tight.

If youre looking for common ground, I have found that asking folks how they want their tax dollars spent, can instantly establish common ground. Most people want a strong military, education for children and young adults, and protections for the elderly and disabled. There are a lot of values that we all share.

And that, right there, is the definition of politics. It is the division of resources and power.
Good tip. I Ill be more conscious of this in the future.

(5,058 posts)Since he voted for Trump (I assume that's in 16 and not 20), what made him have the switch? I would have guessed these people would have CNN on rather than MSNBC.

(89,816 posts)I can understand why some folks find it so damn discouraging. I can get there pretty easily myself. Its just utterly bewildering.
I just have no way to understand why some people just simply MUST cling to the idiocy. Even when the proof and the reality are practically slamming them in the face. They probably watch Pox Noise as a safe haven where their fucked-up world view gets powerful reinforcement.

(558 posts)The sole Republican in our family, a nephew who sells used cars and is convinced he is going to be a millionaire someday so that's why he opposed higher taxes, has now posted on his Facebook page anti January 6th rioters comments and pro vaccine remarks. I think the fact that his wife has MS opened his eyes to the fact that his idols were lying and didn't give a damn about who they hurt. So there is hope for some of the deluded.

What pulled him back? Trump, they hated his no values for the kids to look up to.
And for past year my teen grandson has him watching John Oliver.
I am thrilled.

It just dropped last week, and it goes into why the Qnuts are like they are, and what we can expect to work in extracting them.
