Republican Congresswoman Nancy Mace, inflicted on us by the state of South Carolina, has been running a bold new online ad condemning Democratic plans to boost funding for the Internal Revenue Service. Why, you might ask?
"Biden's policy will double the size of the IRS at the cost of billions of dollars in unpaid taxes. We should stabilize our nation's economy first."

While @z3dster has done us the solid of parsing out what the hell Mace's word shrapnel was meant to actually mean, it's still worth stewing on that odd language. "At the cost of billions of dollars in unpaid taxes?" At the ... cost? But going after tax cheats is widely recognized as being a net federal win, because just a little money allocated to investigating the most prolific tax-dodgers results in much larger revenues when the dodged taxes actually get paid, so—ooh. Ooooooh.
Right.

Bad politics.

(4,292 posts)but under our tax laws should they be paying taxes? No matter what we say. The issue is whether the grandmas are investigated or prosecuted as diligently as the millionaires/billionaires/corporations.
Although if their income is under 10K I doubt they'd have to do anything but report.
WarGamer
(16,579 posts)Very VERY bad politics.
And I'd rather let low income people "get away" with not paying $800 in taxes than have the GOP use this in their ads.
WHY can't they just announce new reporting requirements for those at 400k+???
That way, the American people would see the Gov't FINALLY trying to even the playing field for the "downtrodden" folks.
The Headlines should have read:

Will be used in many mid-term ads.
Very bad optics.
They SHOULD have stated that they want IRS funding doubled to pay closer attention to those making 400k+

Any "bad optics" will come from the false comments of the RW who want to PROTECT the tax cheats!

(16,579 posts)BAD OPTICS.
"Increased IRS attention to the bank accounts of nearly ALL Americans" called for in the BBB Bill.
This is a fact. I want everyone to pay their fair share. But for God's sake, if you want to LOSE an election please proceed.

(4,388 posts)"The updated proposal would not require reporting for accounts that have less than $10,000 of inflows or outflows. More significantly, paychecks and government payments such as Social Security—and the amount of outflows equivalent to those paychecks and payments received—would not count toward the $10,000, exempting most Americans whose income is already reported annually on other IRS forms and targeting the proposal toward more opaque forms of income.
With basic information on account flows, the IRS will be able to select audits more efficiently—which means that people who are cheating are more likely to get caught, while ordinary, honest taxpayers will face fewer unnecessary audits."

(16,579 posts)It's a bad idea, period.
Like I said... people who do odd jobs like walking dogs, selling things at the Farmer's Market, Fiverr, stuff like that... will face new scrutiny and it will be in campaign ads.
I hope it doesn't survive the final language of the Bill because it's idiotic.
So excited to chase low income people but piss their pants when thinking of taxing the rich.
