Ohio lawmaker proposes paying college athletes

Ohio lawmaker proposes paying college athletes

State Rep. Clayton Luckie is trying to get some traction for a new bill he believes could head off the sort of mess that hounded the Ohio State University football program over the past year.

The Democrat from Dayton introduced a bill Wednesday that would allow NCAA Division I schools in Ohio to provide stipends of up to $8,000 a year for their athletes. Division II programs could pay them up to $6,000.

An athlete could also receive as much as $4,000 a year from sources such as a relative or long-time mentor – but not sports agents or boosters.

Luckie, an Ohio State alumnus, said the fallout from the Buckeye football scandal convinced him of the need for schools to provide spending money to athletes.
