Couple sentenced to jail for cutting off dog's leg

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A husband and wife were sentenced Wednesday for cutting off their dog's leg.

Alberto Castenada, 51, and Maria Banuelos, 59, tried an at-home amputation after the dog was hit by a car or injured in some other way.

The dog's severed leg was infested with maggots, and he suffered from apparent pelvic injuries when Kern County Animal Control officers rescued him Aug. 31 from a home on the eastern edge of Bakersfield. He was also dehydrated, with only muddy water to drink.

The 1-year-old male black lab mix was named Onyx by rescue personnel and taken to an orthopedic veterinary specialist in Southern California, where he's made a remarkable recovery.
