White UBS banker mom is fired and her son is charged with assault after they confronted and called cops on black Tennessee parking garage attendant who was checking car permits in their building
Edward Brennan, 27, was served with a warrant by Nashville police last week
He was filmed lunging at Johnny Martinez, who was checking permits on cars at Brennan's building last month
Edward's mom Bitsy called the cops on Martinez, but left before they arrived
She is 'no longer employed' at her job at a UBS wealth management group
A white man has been charged with assault and his mother has been fired from her high-paying banking job after they called the police on a parking attendant at their Nashville apartment complex and tried to physically assault him in a filmed altercation that has since gone viral.
Edward Brennan, 27, was served with an arrest warrant last week after he allegedly took a swing at Johnny Martinez, who was checking cars for permits at the residential parking garage on November 27.
'This is a secure building,' said Bitsy Brennan, Edward's mother.

(6,937 posts)we can make choices about what name we are going to use. We can use a middle name, or slightly change the spelling of a first name, without the bother of going to court. It may, if we want to enter the service, require statements from relatives that, although the name is not exactle as spelled on the birth certificate, the person is the same person, and has been using that name for years. I had to do that. but after that, I had the militaru ID (and later the DD214), and also the Social Securoty Card and a passport (those last two before going ito the seervice actually.) I've had no issues since.
Mine was nowhere near as bad as "Bitsy."
Actually "Bitsy" reminds me of "Fried Green Tomatoes, in which major (female) characters had perfectly normal names but had been saddled with nicknames which implies they were immature, stupid, or otherwise not adult humans. Like Virginia being nicknamed "Ninny." And Imogen becoming "Idgie."
MineralMan
(146,336 posts)In my youth, I was known by my middle name, because I'm a Jr. So, it was less confusing if my father and I weren't called by the same name. I never used my first name, despite it being on my school records, etc. If someone called me by it, like a teacher, I corrected them, and that worked just fine.
Not so much, once I joined the USAF. There, I was called by my first name, and my initial attempt to change that was met with ridicule. So, there it was. I talked to my father, and he said that he had been called by his middle name when younger, but it got switched out with his first name when he served in the USAAF during WWII. "Nothing you can do about that," he said.
So, people in my old home town still know me by my middle name. My parents, until they died, still used it. Everyone else knows me by my first name. I answer to both, of course, depending on where I am.
"Bitsy" is probably derived from "Elizabeth," like Betty, and Lizzy are. Personal acquaintances and family probably use "Bitsy" for that awful woman, but nobody else does, I'm sure. It's really not worth trying to convince everyone to call you by the name used for you when you're young, especially if it's your middle name or some odd nickname. That comes with becoming an adult, I think.
TomSlick
(11,114 posts)Then suddenly, I was known by my father's name.
I knew I had arrived when I went to the Army JAG School for a meeting of senior Judge Advocates. The name tag on the door to my room was "Tom." People actually knew my name - and cared.

(33,563 posts)The nicknames effectively portrayed the culture in which they lived, but the movie showed strong women and African Americans rising above their culture.
The portrayal of the interface between a culture and people willing to rise above their culture was very effective.
The movie would not have been nearly as effective in portraying the interface if the characters were called Imogen and Virginia. At no point were any of the major characters portrayed as immature, stupid or "other than adult."
Hell, we could use some rising above our culture in these times. Unfortunately our culture remains in many ways as appalling as the one in which "Bitsy," Ninny" and "Idgie" lived.
I loved that movie. My whole family loves it, and we've watched it several times; my wife actually got a copy for her birthday from my son.

(28,983 posts)that to police and left the scene of the crime. In most states you can be fired for just about anything. If they think she is going to reflect badly on the company, if co-workers aren't going to be comfortable working around her or her boss now thinks she is racist, they have every right to fire her.
All other things being equal, I don't think we'll be fired for calling the police on a person who refuses to say what he is doing in a secure building.
I do however, think we'll be fired for being an accomplice to assault, demanding identification when already provided via name badge, and then skulking away like cowards from the scene we call the police to before they even arrive. That bit may get us fired.

As you noted, we don't see the very beginning of the interaction. Based on what I HAVE seen of multiple Karen interactions, I'm comfortable in my assumption that it was something along the lines of "What are you doing here?", delivered in a snotty and entitled manner. And then Junior got involved.

(1,039 posts)I live in a condo complex that is very similar to this. It is a secure property and to get into the property by any entrance, including the parking garage, you need to have either a code or a remote.
I know my immediate neighbors and what they drive, and to park in those spots your vehicle needs to have the proper identification.
I pay for this, and it is not cheap. I pay for it for a reason and that reason is security of me and my property.
If I come home and someone is walking around in the garage looking at cars I would absolutely ask them why they are there and if that answer is, "none of your business" I would pursue that inquiry but no longer with that person. A simple call to the onsite property manager would be immediate and I am sure the first question would be, "what is their name". If the person would not answer that she would get in her little golf cart and be there within a couple of minutes.
When she arrived, that would be the end of my involvement.
The assault was obviously wrong, and illegal, and should be punished ... and most likely will be. The assumption that it is not my "business" who is on my property is completely false. It is private property.
This was handled completely wrong by someone making assumptions and someone not following what I am sure are simple rules. I would imagine if this happened that person would have the same phone number I have and make the same call I would make to straighten out the misunderstanding.
Fact remains, it is private property and I have every right to know why anyone not a resident is there.
Kaleva
(36,356 posts)Except you would have first asked the person why he or she was there. Everything else you said you'd do is what I described.
Your comment:
"I live in a condo complex that is very similar to this."
Do you know the appearance and some details of all the other residents and if someone new moves there, is that info provided to you? Pictures? Are you kept abreast of all the employees who work there and informed if someone else, not a regular employee, is gong to be doing work at your condo?
Lurker Deluxe
(1,039 posts)I disagreed with the premise of "shouldn't have even asked".
Do I know every person? Of coarse not, I still work. Does Dorris, the 75 year old retired busy body of the place ... prolly most. Do I know my immediate neighbors and what they drive .. yea, pretty much. There are a few who just keep to themselves and are really not very social, I know what they drive and look like ... would not be able to tell you their name.
Where I live is 85% owner occupied, another strong point of the purchase in 2008. So mostly it is older people who are moving on to other points, assisted care or death, that brings a vacancy. Turnover is very low and this place is simply not that big at 200 units, divided into 2 properties with 5 buildings per property.
There is a web site and a newsletter that lets all know exactly what is going on weekly. From bingo in the clubhouse to the decorating contest/s and winners during Holidays. Events range from garage sales, BBQs at the pool, bus trips to local events, organized walks/bike rides, and various other reasons to get outside and be social. Being in Champions there are several really nice public parks within walking distance and they get used.
I am on the board so yea ... I know what is going on when and where. We have a maintenance staff that consist of 5 men and an on site property manager who is female and I know them and they know me ... very well. There has not been a change in that staff for over 6 years.
If you walk your dog and it takes a crap and you do not pick it up ... someone will see it and report you. It is what it is ... a person, any color, walking through the parking lot car to car looking at them is going to be questioned and, "none of your business" would certainly be the wrong answer.
I hope it never changes. There was a break in to a car 2 years ago and it was demanded at the board meeting that security be upgraded ... and it was.
Kaleva
(36,356 posts)Happened a few weeks ago. I was outside putting stuff away for the approaching winter and noted that someone in a vehicle was driving back and forth slowly. My thought was that they were looking for someone or a residence. My home being hte only one on the street with a visible house number on it, That's happened before so I went to the street and awaited his return. I waved him down and asked if he was looking for someone and he said yes and gave the name. I told him it was 2 houses down in the opposite direction and he thanked me and drove off and turned around at the junction and went ot the home I imagine. I didn't stay to check if he stopped there.
I live in a town were many don't lock their doors when gone for a short period of time to most of the day or so.
In my own view, I wouldn't want to live in an area that was "secure" as that implies that there's a threat to one's safety. I'd be placing my wife's an my own safety at risk. But that's just me. You may see many benefits to be living where you do. Benefits that outweigh the heightened risk.
