Some random thoughts strung together . . .

There are more guns in America than people.

There are about a million more added every year.

The FBI has warned for the last decade that the right wing militia types are the greatest terror threat we face.

Evidence points to organized militia involvement in the Jan 6 insurrection, ie Proud Boys, 3%ers, Oath Keepers.

One of the local gunners pointed out that only 3% of gun owners own 50% of guns in civilian hands. He's the expert and I'll accept his word. That's roughly 200 million guns in the hands of 3 million zealots or about 60 guns each.

Who are these people and what have they in mind for that armory?

It is the opinion of world leaders that US democracy is backsliding toward authoritarianism.

If Trump or someone like him runs again and loses, what happens next?

6. To one who is scared of an armed citizenry, certainly.

Speaking personally (given my demographics), my chance of being murdered by someone using a firearm is extremely low. I'm far more likely to be killed in a car accident....and I'm not scared of that.

Now, if one is (for example) an African American young man in a high crime area, the odds change quite a bit. Something on the order of 20 times more likely than for myself, an old white guy in a low crime suburban neighborhood. Being scared under those circumstances is perfectly rational.

However, I don't have a solution that is both politically feasible and capable of passing constitutional muster. Those that might pass in the next decade or two (Red flag laws, assault weapon bans, etc.) won't put a significant dent in the numbers. More draconian plans such as confiscating all semiautos with detachable magazines (at least half of the guns in circulation) don't have the slightest chance of coming to pass in the foreseeable future.
