In response to David Brooks tweet:
I fell in love with conservatism as a young man. What the hell happened to it?
@ChristianFinnegan:
Ooh, I know this one! Your mythical Conservatism is a niche brand of elite narcissism incapable of winning national elections. So you used evangelicals/racists/gun nuts as electoral foot soldiers. But then--whoops!--they became self-aware and realized they don't need you.

(29,205 posts)the deplorable knuckle draggers.
It's more like they went along with your libertarian ideals but when the country club republicans kept the same system in place that they blamed for the "loss of their white nation" (fictional 1950s 'Merica) they decided to burn it all down in favor of anti-science, anti-government, anti-society everything if it "owned the libs".

(6,182 posts)Unfortunately, when you call forth the hounds from hell, they kinda like the freedom of being able to run wild and ravage the countryside.
So now they're a force in their own right. I don't think these people are capable of being happy unless everyone is as miserable as they are.
They will destroy everything, including themselves to that end.

(21,768 posts)What has changed is not the "philosophy".
What has changed is the people hearing the "message". It used to be tailored to business people and the wealthy elite. Now it has spread to the masses.

(47,501 posts)I was going to say pretty much the same thing. Conservatism is an excuse for being intolerant and insensitive toward those less fortunate. Until recent years, it was often wrapped in lofty, intellectual language seemingly giving it more legitimacy. Now the ignorant masses have embraced it, which is understandable being republican politicians have catered to them for decades to get their votes.
