(549 posts)My cousin's visited from Germany. I found I had to make excuses for alot of what they saw here. The roads alone shocked them in more ways than one

(792 posts)I don't think their media ever properly convey how big and diverse it is, in all facets. You can go from opulence to destitution in a few blocks. Travel hundreds of miles of nothingness. Drive by hours of strip malls or forests. See swamps, deserts, mountains and everything in between.
The roads are pretty much universally unpleasant or boring to drive though. German roads are a pleasure.
My German friend was most impressed by: our meats, our sodas, and our weather.

(7,638 posts)I've seen this little gem circulating on the evils of socialism and Democrats. It's a great republiQan talking point.

(24,736 posts)If central government had more control of private property, e.g., tax the rich, perhaps we would have better infrastructure! Y'know?

(7,638 posts)Using Putins Russia as a shining example is republiQan.

(14,915 posts)While certainly not as spiff and flashy as this Moscow station appears s to be.
There have been times when money reduced from the Feds, to The States probably mostly Republican watch. So our city has less to work with.
It's probably true that MTA is not as good as an organization as it should be.
While I lived in Brooklyn ('00s) they built themselves a rather semi fancy building. Their old one was a mess, but this new one seemed at least from the outside - at least two types of stone facade, with certain design details that probably cost more...

(89,252 posts)Many places are also abandoned . Also Moscow has more people than NYC while the population of Russia is much lower than the US . We have same issues with places being abandoned and people moving to certain cities but we have more places that do well spread out across the country .
One thing I hate about the internet and meme crap is simplistic things like this which are misleading but people who see it think they have so much knowledge.
It's like the right wingers who keep attacking California . YEah, California has many places we need to fix but the red areas are dying places with Drug addiction and even wealthy republicans don't live or invest there. They will never ask themselves why that is .
We have a problem in this country for sure but the ones responsible for it are those who attack those problems . They like to point out the problems but attack Democrats that try to do anything to fix it .

(12,452 posts)Just to be brief, West to East from Japan to Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Bangkok, Dubai, Istanbul, Moscow, Vienna, Bratislava, Prague and Budapest... just to make the list manageable... and that's a fraction of my list. (oh, China too... been all over China)
Our infrastructure is embarrassing. At a MINIMUM, JFK and LAX should be equal to Frankfurt Airport (FRA)
Maybe a few less F22's?

(89,252 posts)But i'm talking about Russia specifically here and it minimizes the serious problems in the country which are much more than the US .

(12,452 posts)MANY Russian cities have elaborate "Undergrounds"...
And as a bonus you frequently have classically trained musicians in the Subway playing Violin or Cello or something.
