Everyone cites the Vampire Chronicles, which were pretty great for the first four books (and I liked the fifth). But I was obsessed with the Witching Hour. Such a rich historical novel. When I moved to San Francisco eventually, one of the first things I did was drive around and see all the places she describes in the book.

The sequels were trash, but that novel is so good. I've read it at least four or five times. One of those rare books you can open to any page and just end up reading for an hour.

It's been years since I read it, but I remember I couldn't put it down. I vaguely remember the other two.

Masterful. I was a teen when I read it, and it was the first time I saw an author just weave together so many details into a cohesive whole.

And she really seemed to capture whatever era she was working through. I just wanted to go hang out in her library to see all the books she used to get that level of detail.
