Big wind. There's plenty of that, and it isnt weather related at all.

(7,638 posts)At least Chicago has good food. Don't do casseroles. I might visit although 10 miles outside Chicago it's kind of a wasteland. Like civilization just stops.

(53,035 posts)Lots of good restaurants. No one will force you to make a casserole at home, and they aren't restaurant fare.

(8,835 posts)At this time, the Coloradans are saying: WHAT SNOW ??????????????????????????
Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Southern California better immediately start making contingency plans. Those cities should immediately cease ALL lawn watering, Immediately Shut down all back yard pools, and immediately quit watering any and all golf courses and cemeteries.
Las Vegas also better invest in huge diesel or natural gas electrical generators to prepare for the loss of power when Lake Meade? runs down to a level where they can't use the Hydroelectric generators on Hoover Dam.......
(Lake Mead and Lake Powell are at their lowest points since they were being filled. The have been constantly going down for years and years.....)

(115,735 posts)It slowed my daily walk down a bit because I had to climb over the snowbanks the plows piled up, otherwise it was just another normal winter day in Minnesota. The mailman is still wearing shorts.

(53,035 posts)It was okay though since many people had already used it. I have a Camry, not a 4WD, so I worry a bit. I'd like to get a Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid, but they cost sooo much.
One year, the snow ripped off the plastic bottom of my car. I guess hitting snow is like being in an accident.

I'm from the midwest and these Puget Sound folks on the road with snow scare me so much I don't go out at all on snowy roads.
Not their fault -- just essentially no experience with slick roads.

(9,186 posts)Several years ago I drove from the Des Moines area to Kansas City, Mo. It was Christmas time, and there was a two inch snow overnight. Virtually unnoticeable in Des Moines, but it almost shut KC down.
When I was a kid I used to lay in bed at night in NE Iowa listening to KAAY in Little Rock (admittedly not midwest). Theyd have 1 of snow FORECAST, and school would be canceled. Id lay there knowing Id have to shovel 6 in the morning before going to school.

(7,901 posts)some of us are wondering if it will arrive in enough quantity and at the correct altitude. Folks along the Colorado River Basin are worried it may be far too little when it does arrive.
My valley and the Bitterroot basin depend on the snow cap put down on top of the Sapphire and Bitterroot Mountains for our drinking water, agricultural water and the river water which supports the fish and out door activities. It also plays a major factor in determining how intense and how long the fire season is, as well as tempering the local climate in the hotter months of the year. A wide range of forest animals depend on the winter weather cycle as do wild and domestic plants.
Snow is something we expect and need here. We live in it and with it, and even play in it. The grocery stores don't run out of bread and other items just because a few flakes fall.

(59,504 posts)Like many mid century families, mine moved from East Chicago to Hammond to Highland - then to Schererville when I was at IU. The biggest storm (I think in 1967) I remember ended up being 28 inches of snow, but it was such a surprise that we had school that morning. We lived about 3 blocks from the High School and when they decided to send us home, they asked those of us who walked to school to walk in groups of people who lived on the same street. We ended up stopping in many homes calling parents to say where we were) being given cocoa and cookies in several until we reached our homes.
By the next morning drifts covered cars parked in driveways and on the street. My next oldest sister and I went on a short walk just to because we could - it was incredibly weird.

(14,915 posts)The South stuff is really funny, and understandable!
I remember being in DC when it snowed, and started earlier than that expected.
🤔
By the time it was around 3PM at ?3" inches while I was on The Metro tons of people started pouring in! All non-essential Federal employees were being sent home. I was kind of snickering then, but yeah, it's relative.
🤔 As an NYC'r I dunno - I think the "snowmageddon" aplelation doesn't get bandied about till ?24+".
Otoh having met some ?Buffalo, NY area workers who were temporarily assigned to a NYS agency office here in NYC - they're closer to a Midwestern response than we are.
