I just watched excerpts from a debate of Republican Primary candidates for Minnesota Governor in 2022. What I saw both shocked me and gave me hope - maybe.
All five of those GQP gubernatorial candidates in MN declared that there were voting irregularities in the 2020 presidential election. ALL FIVE! In Minnesota!
Now, that means that our Democratic governor will be re-elected in MN, but it also means something else. If all Republican candidates for Governor make statements like that, the Republican party has clearly united around absolute insanity.
That's scary! Not in Minnesotata, which will react by rejecting whoever wins the primary. But in the rest of the country, it demonstrates that we are only going to see Trumpers as Republican candidates in 2022. Everywhere. In every State. For every office. Trump has hypnotized Republicans running for office, and they're too frightened of Trump's insane toadies to say anything that will piss them off.
What does that mean? It means that, in some states, it will absolutely take a unified Democratic electorate to defeat whatever Republican Trumper crazy people who manage to win primaries. That's the important news.
Here's the good news: If, and only if, Democrats unify and commit to a strong GOTV effort in 2022, we can beat those assholes almost everywhere. Not every Republican voter is a Trumper. We can get some of them to vote against Trumpism and help us. But, unless we are unified and willing to work, we could lose more races than we should. And here's why that matters:
If we win more than a few races where crazy Trumpers are the general election candidates for House, Senate, Governor, and even state legislative office, we will not only win more offices, we will actually increase our majorities nationally and gain majorities in some closely divided state legislatures. And we can do that by simply displaying a unified front which rejects Trumpism as our main point.
How can we lose? We can lose if we do not display unity and work together to bring out every possible Democratic vote, along with some Republicans who are not committed to Trump and his toadies. If some of us fail to show enthusiasm, we will not be united. But, if we avoid disunity and work on every race, we will win more than we lose, and that will give us the majorities we need.
Does that idea piss you off? Why? It shouldn't. It should fire you up to do everything you can to ensure Democratic victories. Everywhere. In every race. If we actually do that, we can not only improve our chances; we can defeat Trumpism, once and for all. Let's show them a unified face!
Please think. Please help. Our future may depend on that.
Elect Democrats! Fight Trumpers!

(15,265 posts)Joe Biden is doing his best to pass legislation that puts people first. I am also on board with the 48 members voting with the Democrats who are onbiard with the unadulterated BBB bill.
That is unity. I am not onboard with Sinema and Manchin blocking the passing of these bills and or having key provisions stripped out of bills. Manchins time as governor has gone to his head. He thinks he is king and his political ambitions and personal agenda are out of touch with what his constituents want.
I am also unrepentant in my belief that any effort to hold the GOP accountable for their misdeeds will fall flat.

(15,265 posts)mean we have to be sycophants. Unity here is not going to make a bit of difference "out there".
There is I believe an entiduasim gap.out there. Hopefully fear of the GOP wresting vontrol back will be enough to motivate those unethusuastic voters to vote I'm November.

(146,325 posts)It's a matter of us encouraging others to do the same. That matters materially, and it's easy to do. We all have family and friends we communicate with. We can make a real difference. That's not even open to question.

(15,265 posts)and are aware of the issues. I do sense an enthusiasm gap. Particulary among younger voters. Post college life in the wake of the pandemic is tough and they are not optimistic about the future. College Loan relief was/is a pipe dteam and salaries vs the cost of living are a sobering reality.

(38,325 posts)Nevertheless my politics are practical and very thoroughly Democratic.
I don't vote for Republicans. I don't vote for third party candidates who can't win.
Biden was not my first choice in the Democratic primaries but I'm proud to have voted for him as my President.
People who sit out elections because "both parties are the same" make me angry.
The only people I want sitting out elections are Republicans.
I'm right there, too.

(6,105 posts)I strongly support this message and have felt this way since HRC won the Democratic nomination. I knew that tfg and his army of brown shirts were a danger to this country.
I'm still a far lefty, democratic socialist, but I know most of this country does not think like me. So, the Democrats must win in order to save democracy.

(32,726 posts)We Dems must be willing to look past the petty bickering that we all love, and UNITE against the real foe.
I love how you've explained this too. Every intelligent Democrat (and most of us ARE intelligent) can see the wisdom of your thinking. We all need to stick together. It takes discipline to hold off on the bickering and sniping, it takes patience to wait until the foe is beaten, and maturity to see the greater good benefits ALL of us not just a few.

(17,025 posts)VOTING IS the Most important weapon we have! I feel we (Dems., especially in battle ground states) need to come up with the absolute best plan to help get people to the poles to VOTE! They (RETHUGS) are trying to take away the weapon that WILL DEFEAT THEM. We all know this.

(23,926 posts)doing everything possible to ensure that Republicans never wield power again is probably the most important task I've ever taken on on in my seven decades on this planet.
They are no longer interested in the well-being of the country that I fought and bled for.
They seek power, and nothing else.
Power to disenfranchise those who don't look or act like them.
Power to continue to enrich the already privileged.
Power for its own sake, in case they eventually think of yet another way to fuck the rest of us.
In other words, I'm with you on this one, buddy.

(3,579 posts)Messaging and labeling that the GOP is antiDemocratic partly that wants a one party state without future elections.
Define one party state for the stupid.
Then, define that they will not have any voting rights - again for the stupid.
Then, see if they understand what a Democracy is - for the stupid.
Then, with a lot of repeating then the stupid might understand, and a small minority might vote to continue the Republic.
There is hope for some of the stupid.

(3,243 posts)That, in my opinion, was why Republicans won down ballot races in areas where Trump lost in 2020. It just might work that way again in the midterms if enough non-trump republicans stay sensible enough to vote against trumpism.

Doesn't sound like a recipe for success to me.
But, OK, I'll give it a shot: Joe Manchin and Krysten Sinema are the very best, we should do whatever they are willing to allow! (See, even an exclamation point to indicate excitement about watching our democracy die!)

(10,839 posts)Unity of the majority is our superpower. But . . . it means supporting those who may not check the political purity box. In 2022, a "D" behind a candidate's name is the requirement and we zero in on the insanity of the Republican Party.
Democrats are a coalition party which means we come in a variety of stripes and political perspectives. The thing that unites us is we believe in the American experiment, our democratic, constitutional Republic. Republicans have demonstrated at every turn that they do not.
We do not have the luxury of claiming 'lack of excitement' or falling for the Republican narrative that 'both parties are the same.' The differences are now raw, in living color.
We need to beat these bastards everywhere.
There's only one party willing to fight for the continuance of the United States. That's on us because this is the moment we need to rally, come together and win in every corner of the country. No slacking, no staying home or throwing our hands up in frustration.
We fight the good fight now or we may never have another opportunity.
Btw, in case people haven't noticed: President Biden's numbers are ticking up.

(146,325 posts)against suggestions that we do better about unifying is either not thinking it through or something. I hope to help people think it through. For those who argue because "something," I figure something is going on there.
Elections are a binary thing. We win them or we lose them. If we win enough of them, we get to lead. If not, the other side makes the decisions. Binary.
There's not a lot of nuance in elections on a nationwide basis. We win or we lose.
I suggest we focus on winning.
