are because fucking republican ignorant assholes refuse to vaccinate. We could have beat this had it not been for the "stupid" among us.

Masking and social distancing are requried, since breakthrough cases are just as contagious in vaccinated individuals than in unvaccinated individuals. Most of my documented exposures since August were from people (some masked with dick noses or chin diapers, some not) who have been vaccinated but who were lax about masking and social distancing.

(36,113 posts)When they lifted the mask mandate last spring they let everyone assume if you were vaxxed you were safe.

(6,008 posts)It would have been better if they had said:
a) if you're vaxxed, you can feel safer unmasking in private get togethers with other vaxxed people. (The anti-maskers were doing this already, so this wouldn't alter their behavior at all...)
b) we still recommend masking in public until your state/county has reached fully vaccinated rates of +80% (currently, I don't think anywhere would qualify, not even on a county level, but I could be wrong...)
What they said may have been ok individual health advice, but it was downright terrible public health advice.

(7,403 posts)Yes, you can say that Republicans making this political and thus adopting the losing side (anti-vaxx) means around 150,000 unnecessary American deaths have occured but this is a global problem with lack of global vaccinations so we would be dealing with this, though on a smaller scale, even if Republicans would have been team players and not the assholes they turned out to be. But, no, we would not have fully beaten this. Indeed, this could be with us for several more years and that means more boosters and more mask wearing and more social distancing.

And there are probably some more Monday cases to be reported as I've found comparing late at night vs mid-day next day

(13,501 posts)At this point, the pandemic is not a political thing. We are all in this together and we should start caring about keeping everyone safe.
This variant is so contagious it would have spread even if there wasn't a political divide with vaccine intake and masking. It's spreading in countries in Europe who "did everything right." Park Slope, BK, which has an incredible vaccine and masking compliance, is one of the top districts in NYC with positive cases.
It doesn't help at this point to blame the GOP. We need to work together, pressure the local, state and national government to make tests and antivirals more accessible, and all do our very best to stay healthy and keep those most vulnerable around us healthy.
