(47,236 posts)how reactive some of the comments are. If we see something in quotes after someone's name, we assume they said it.
I listened to the very short video, because I couldn't believe he could be so insensitive and apparently he wasn't. Sadly, this isn't the first time I've seen a subject line or headline differ considerably from the content of a post or article. A lot of major publications do it as well and being we live in an era of Tweets and memes, it can be very misleading.

Mayor: When a Mayor has swagger, the city has swagger. We've allowed people to beat us down so much that all we did was wallow in COVID. Its we did, and we no longer believed this is a city of swagger. This is a city of resiliency. And all of these messages out there of what is going to happen? What is going to happen? I think black America - we desperately NEED swagger. I need it. I need to know that there are people out there that will get up in the grill of the white American racist and make them lose their shit - just for being fabulous.
This man came from NOTHING. I've read posts at du applauding elon musk - who is a menace to society, who had everything handed to him on a silver platter.
I give people that look like me, and who are successful, more room than white America to be themselves. I contrast all of the opportunities my parents gave me - with everything he had to fight tooth and nail for.
If I had been beaten while in jail in NY state as a teenager - my dad would have placed a personal call to Cuomo the first. And Cuomo would have taken it.
Swagger is the black police officer that stopped his beating. He was impressed with his 'swagger'. That 'swagger' that go two white cops to stop beating him.
Swagger is good in black folks. I've seen this gentleman compared to Ben Carson on this thread.
I'm like - are these people fucking kidding me?
Ben Carson is a dweebie mon zweebie - who played the part of the 'one black man' that Malcolm X warned us about.

Get yourself boosted. Mark your followup booster date on the calendar. Get the flu vaccine (pay extra for the high-dose version to get more antibodies). Get your pets their flu vaccine. Stockpile masks and put them all around your house. Take COVID seriously and your body will reward you.

Look, Adams wasn't my choice for mayor... he didn't even make it into my ranking. But the negativity in this thread and the taking things out of context here are frustrating. He's a newly sworn in democratic leader facing a real challenge right now.
He's right. NYers will get past this bullshit. We always do. And he's trying to buck us up because many of us are furious about the state and insecurity that we are feeling. Seinding our kids back to school this week is scary with the numbers we have. We all feel like we are sitting ducks if we haven't gotten this thing yet. I can not plan work meetings, and we went back into lockdown in our house over Christmas break, cancelling plans to see close friends (vaccinated and boosted friends, like we are) because we've all been exposed and considered close contacts to covid positive people.
So, yeah, the man is trying to reassure us we will get past this because we are strong people.
How horrifying.

Even that creep Giuliani, already corrupt, couldn't be terrible at everything while he was mayor, and wasn't. That was before he went into his bizarre death spiral of course.

After years of the same people going nuts if a politician they liked says "I like dogs, not cats" and it's paraphrased as so-and-so doesn't care for cats: (THAT'S NOT WHAT SHE MEANT!) and linking the whole quote over and over as if the meaning is different if you don't use the literal same words.

That said, it's WAY too soon to be talking like that... unless he agrees with Bill Gates and thinks the pandemic will run its course by the end of March.

(58,785 posts)Speaking of trumpism, we really should all take a breath and reboot as necessary.
So what if DSA types wanted NY to elect someone else and NY chose this Democrat instead? Trumpism's viciously stupid "us good/you die" attack dog mentality means they have to be terrible, horrible, no good, very bad citizens. But that's them.
Time to wish the best for NYC and thus for all of us.

I could care less about swagger, just put policies in place that will save lives please instead of following the bottom line of back to school and work etc. And trying to pretend this is over etc.

The full video has been posted twice here. It's more than 34 minutes, a far cry from the mere 28 seconds presented in the OP, and he never said the "quote" in the subject line.

(5,164 posts)I will watch the rest but it likely wont change that. A need for swag is not a concern anyone should have imo let alone the mayor of nyc. He actually did say word for word in the first part of the video, the exact words in the tweet.

(31,777 posts)Thats why I got so much swagger. We need a Mayor of swagger. We need a Council Woman with swagger. We need Assembly Women with swagger. We need a Borough President with swagger. We need a Chancellor with swagger. We need a Police Commissioner with swagger. This is New York. It's a privilege to live in New York, and the leadership should have that swagger, that's what was what has been missing in this city. Well, you inspired me.
