The Republican congresswomans harsh comments about Trumps role in inciting the insurrection were unlike anything else Fox News viewers have heard in the year since. It speaks volumes about the state of conservative politics in 2022 America that the sight of Liz Cheney on Fox News Thursday afternoon was genuinely surprising.
The Republican congresswoman appeared from Capitol Hill with Bret Baierthe networks last remaining anchor even capable of delivering straight news after Chris Wallaces recent departureand did not hesitate to tear into former President Donald Trump for his leadership role in inciting the insurrection one year earlier.
After praising speeches marking the anniversary from President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris earlier in the day, Cheney quickly pivoted to attacking Trump. This was a mob that was summoned by and provoked by the president of the United States in an effort to stop the counting of electoral votes, which is a Constitutional process, she said, explaining how the events of January 6th were different from the outside threats that hit America in the cases of 9/11 or Pearl Harbor.
Repeatedly during the interview, Baier attempted to goad Cheney into criticizing the current administration, but time and again she explained away her policy differences with the Democrats while focusing on the wrongdoing of Trump. When Baier characterized Trumps speech prior to the attack as peaceful, she pushed back, noting that he told his crowd to fight like hell.

(6,917 posts)No more FoxNews. It is not a news channel, it is a propaganda channel.
Deny them the use of the word they brand themselves with, thats how this battle is won in the minds of consumers.
Avoid the term Fox News like the plague.

(10,434 posts)and at the end he apologized to Obama. Obama told him no worries, he was just doing his job. I've seen video of foreign journalists, and they're nearly always confrontational like that.
I wish Obama had asked him why no one from the Fox sewer ever interviewed a republicon using that style.

it doesn't necessarily mean they want to preserve our democracy.
If they did we'd see at least some of them supporting Voting Rights legislation.

I wish everyone could stop analyzing his speech on that very afternoon for hot word combinations as evidence of incitement. Everyone uses colorful almost militarized language of "taking the country back" and "fight like hell" etc. That just leads to debates with them. Pull the frame back a little:The fact is He was inciting the insurrection [thank you Tickle] with every repeated lie all month long about the election, and he's still doing it now! i wouldn't waste a minute debating anyone about what he 'really' meant by "fight like hell".

(369 posts)My point is everyone says that. My little league coach said that. Democrats say that. It's meaningless as some type of indictment. It's not an unusual phrase at all.
Focus on the Lies, that's the incitement to riot, because he's still doing it.

(369 posts)In the context of a political rally he said "fight like hell" that's pretty toothless. if you think they got all violent because he said that at that moment you're ignoring the months and years of lies inciting people up to that point. Each lie tearing at the fabric society. Each one setting the stage so he wouldn't have to say much at all by that point, but yeah lets focus on some common phrase that everyone says because this 1 time it got violent afterward. i think focusing on that phrase misses the big picture of the chronic lying that continues to radicalize people to this day. That's 1000 times worse than a single common phrase that nobody would otherwise think twice about.

(5,940 posts)They dearly wanted to pretend that Trump was being impeached for nothing more than urging his followers to "fight like hell." They played a long, long video montage of Democratic politicians using similar verbiage in their speeches: "Fight." "Let's get out there and fight." "Let's go, let's fight." "Fight." "Fight.", etc., etc., etc.
To focus on that single phrase is to allow Republicans to frame the debate - a mistake we make all too often. Instead, why not focus on this simple fact: Trump could have instantly called off his army of goons at any time, just by dashing off a quick Tweet. He. Refused. To. Do. That. They were doing what he sent them to do.

(7,263 posts)Context matters. And TFG is very good at using innocuous sounding phrases as dog whistles.
TFG dog whistled his minions and incited insurrection by telling them to storm the Capital and use force with those very words.
In this case 'fight like hell' is NOT just a figure of speech. However Tucker would have one believe that.

(2,146 posts)of the Old Guard's campaign to recover the party and dump Trump and his cronies. She has daddy and his crew behind her - I saw this one coming the first day she stood up to say something. She already had their backing. She is smart. She knows it would take a miracle for her to get the nomination, BUT OTOH, if the Cheney cabal runs the Trump cult out of the party, who else can they put up that has clean hands?

(11,631 posts)Watch turtle periodically try to cut ties and graham did it too... unfortunately they have lost control of the frankenstein monster... the base that they have conditioned to respond to racist dogwhistles for 40 years is all in for him. Everytime someone tries to stand up they realize they no longer have control of the deplorables. The problem is they really need all those dumb rednecks they have conditioned to have any chance of winning and they are all still home polishing their maga hats.
And Trump for as ignorant as he is seems to be just lizard brain power savy enough to whip the magats into a frenzy whenever anyone opposes him and they quickly get back in line.

They want her expelled, expunged, obliterated.
There is barely any policy that Liz Cheney and I would agree on. But in this moment, I have to say there's a lot to admire there.
Never thought I'd say that. Strange times we are a-living!

(2,146 posts)because her Daddy will bring the hammer down on them like an atom bomb. They all know this: Daddy Cheney plays really dirty. And he will not stand by while his little princess gets attacked.. There are a couple of GOP fools like Jim, who think they can go after her, but just you watch, if anyone does, suddenly, they will get real quiet and kind of back out of the limelight..

Many of us refused to admit that while our definitions wandered a bit, our deep beliefs in our history were cut in stone. Cheney may be alone in Congress, but she is not alone in history.
May the cowardly, ambitious Republicans who would throw Eisenhower, Teddy Roosevelt, Lincoln and even Nixon out of the party finally show the tiniest bit of spine.

(266 posts)I wonder, who the boys in the back room are. The power/money boys calling the shots. Benedict Donald, is too stupid and weak, to handle something as complex, as his attempt to overthrow the goverment. Maybe Putin and the oil boys, or the Kock brothers, (Wall Street) etc. The ones who pushed Citizens United and Nafta down our throats.
Sorry for the rant, Zorro. Semper Fidelis..
