I pray we don't repeat the bad parts of history.

Brooks claimed that he "meant no disrespect to the Senate of the United States" by attacking Sumner, and also that he had not intended to kill Sumner, or else he would have used a different weapon. Brooks was tried in a District of Columbia court for the attack. He was convicted of assault and was fined $300, though he was not incarcerated.[1]: 83

The first battle of the civil war people brought blankets and picnic baskets and chairs to watch the battle seeing it was not taken seriously either.

Tidball later described a crowd of men (and a few enterprising saleswomen who brought pies and other edibles to sell) eager to watch the battle. It was Sunday and everybody seemed to have taken a general holiday; that is all the male population, he wrote.
In attendance were a dozens of members of Congress, writes Michael E. Ruane for The Washington Post.
I'm praying we've learned from the past and will treat the 1/6 assholes according to what the US AG said; more harsh sentences for those who didn't come forward.

(7,522 posts)People from across the south sent Brooks new canes in support of his violent act. Who wouldn't expect the same reaction from MAGAts if a similar incident happened today. Violence and the threat of same has always been a pillar of the racist, authoritarian mindset, even in a democracy. It still is, as is being demonstrated on a regular basis.
