A Hill To Die On

In all of the discussions that took place as we marked the one-year anniversary of the January 6, 2021, insurrection, one topic was overlooked: the fact that the Democrats took an incredible political risk in speaking their minds about who was responsible for the events of that day.

President Biden, VP Kamala Harris, Chuck Schumer - and many others - did not hesitate to lay blame at the feet of Republicans: the former pOTUS, his co-conspirators, his enablers, his Big Lie propagandists, and his easily-led supporters who have neither the inclination nor the intellectual capacity to think beyond the next round of Kool-aid.

It would have been so much easier to make flowery speeches about national unity, to adopt a let's let bygones be bygones approach, to tone-down the fiery rhetoric and finger-pointing in hopes of garnering more votes among the fence-sitters, the more moderate Republicans, the still-persuadable independents who might scurry back to the side of the GOP if they felt that the blame game was too harsh, and had gone uncomfortably too far.

Speaking loudly, clearly, and in no uncertain terms was a risk the Democrats were willing to take - and that alone speaks volumes about how committed they are to putting the truth above individual ambitions, and the preservation of democracy above political careers.

What the Democrats did yesterday was to state that if they are to choose a hill to die on, it will be this hill - the hill of honesty and integrity, the hill of the Constitution and the principles of democracy, the hill of justice and the rule of law.

In stark contrast, the hill the Republicans have chosen to defend is a putrefying mound of dirt, built on the corpses of whatever morals they once declared to possess and whatever truths they have chosen to bury, atop which stands a failed, orange-faced loser who has promised them eternal political life in exchange for unwavering loyalty that will never be reciprocated.

I know which hill I'd rather die on - and I believe the majority of Americans agree with my choice. I'd rather die fighting for what is just and what is fair than die kissing the ass of a bloviated, deranged idiot whose lack of morals is only surpassed by his inability to face reality.

Well done, President Biden et al - I admire your commitment, I respect your courage, and I am truly inspired by your willingness to say what needed to be said without regard to the political consequences that will undoubtedly be pounced-upon by those who have had nothing relevant to say since January 20, 2017 - but still kept saying it, nonetheless.

refused to call out Republican out of fear of Republicans saying mean things about them. The professional victims schooled at Pox News know how to turn up the volume on the feigned outrage machine. It's always worked in the past. Recall the reaction to John Kerry saying the Cheneys have a lesbian daughter they love. Recall the reaction to Hillary's reference to a vast right wing conspiracy, and she was right. Remember when the FBI released a report identifying right wing domestic terrorists as a major threat. Republicans forced them to retract it.
Biden concluded normal Americans have heard enough from the whining butt plugs disguised as patriots. I know I have.
Appeasing Nazis didn't work in the 30s. It's a lesson we have to take seriously. It is incumbent on Democratic leadership to take off the boxing gloves when in a knife fight with scumbags willing to align with Putin because he's perceived as a strong leader.
For years my advice to Democrats is that when we have the Republicans down we put our heels on their necks and rotate.
Whenever I'm confronted by a rabid Republican I ask them how much did George Soros give Trump to destroy the Republican Party. Letting that fester in their feeble minds brings a smile to my face, especially when they get that look Tucker Carlson gets like a dog when seeing a magic trick.
What Trump did is a major crime against America and carries penalties up to and including blindfolds and cigarettes.
Biden is making them defend sedition rooted in lies and bigotry. This should be quite amusing.

Biden's people may have finally decided that it's time to pull out their secret weapon, sentience. In the continuing struggle to survive, many Republigoons will back off when they sense that their dance with stupidity may have unavoidable negative repercussions. Though not exactly a threat, per se, the president drew a line, saying "this is far enough, when the Proud Boy types go down you don't want to be in the crowd". The balloon of Trumpism lost air on January 6th 2022. It could be a simple "mop up", as they used to say, from this point.

There are many, many veterans who already made that choice starting with the Revolutionary War. My family has had members serving in the armed services starting with WWI and every war since. It hurts my heart to see what is happening today, where there are actually veterans and military members who are supporting the big lie. Does anyone have a replacement plan or is the plan to just install a modern day "king". What is happening makes me angry to see some Americans so willing to erase 250 years of hard fought freedom for the country that has been a guiding light for the world.

I fear for the youngest members of my family moving into the future.

I hope what I saw yesterday with Kamala & Joe's speeches yesterday reflect a new
"Hill To Die On" philosophy and real time practice. Those were some of the best
speeches I have ever seen or heard. The K-Bomb's call to patriotism, love of America,
and protection of what made this country great and then President Biden's calling out
TFG without even saying his name time after time.

No more Mr. Nice Guy we have to accept that for now a certain % of voters are lost
and move on. More of "us" then they have of "them."

But lack the fortitude to speak their minds in public when the fate of the nation rests in their hands.

The cowardice of most members of the GOP is an ancillary to your brilliant prose, Nance. We chose the right hill.

his speech was about choosing a side. I understand Magats because I live among them, they are unreasonable, not worthy of wasting time trying to reform them. The time to fight them has long since passed.

Did anyone listen to Marc Elias yesterday? He has 37 law suits fighting the GQP legislation. I believe it was Nicolle who asked him, is it too late to counter the anti-voter legislation that GQPers have passed? He answered there is some time left, but not much. He said that he cannont stop the rigging of the next election unless the Senate passes its voter protection bills. Enough of the everything will be OK talk, it's time to fight, time to pick a side.

Fantastic speech Mr. president, should have been given long ago.

Also, it's about time Chuck Schumer, take the freaking votes, and let Manchin know if he wants to be Benedict Arnold have at it. This is a partisan issue Mr. Manchin, you are either for democracy or for autocracy, the choice is yours. Should have been done 6 months ago before all of these voter suppression bills have been passed.

If the GQP wins back the House they have passed legislation that enables them to steal the presidency.
If the GQP wins back the Senate, I don't believe they will but they can try to cheat to do that also, the first thing that McConnell will do is abolish the filibuster.
If the GOQ controls all 3 branches of government in 2024 our democracy will have ceased.

I now believe it is up to the select committee to save our democracy. They will portray to the American people, hopefully in prime time, what has transpired, and what is at stake for our future. Maybe they can sway enough voters to choose democracy, I pray.

Today is day 23 that DOJ has received a criminal referral for Mark Meadows.
