Students Return to School Amid COVID's Omicron Surge, Express Fear, Frustration

Another year, another variant.

That’s what students across the country are facing as they return to school this month from winter break.

Even though COVID-19 vaccine distribution has been increasing — with more than 60% of the United States fully vaccinated — the more contagious, faster spreading Omicron variant has brought some school districts into a pit of regression. Students say they’re stressed, worried, and overwhelmed. Teachers and schools are struggling to find substitutes. Labor and supply chain shortages are impacting everything from school bus routes to school lunches.

And while the coronavirus shut down nearly everything in 2020, this time, how virus mitigation is being handled by schools really depends on where you live — and students, teachers, and public officials are split on whether returning in person or staying remote is the safest option.
