Biden, former congressional colleagues pay tribute to Reid, who is lying in state at U.S. Capitol
President Biden and former congressional colleagues Wednesday paid tribute to the late senator Harry M. Reid, who lay in state in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, marking the final return of the pragmatic dealmaker to the institution where he became a political force across two presidencies.
Reid, who had been treated for pancreatic cancer, died last month at the age of 82.
“He was tough as nails, a fighter to his core — but one of the most compassionate individuals you could ever imagine,” said Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.).
Schumer joked that Reid would have thought all the pomp surrounding his death was too much. “You guys organized an entire ceremony in Nevada, invited former and current presidents … and even the frontman from the Killers? … And still that wasn’t enough for all of you?” Schumer imagined Reid saying.
