The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that ther ate of gun deaths of children 14 and younger rose by roughly 50 percent from the end of 2019 to the end of 2020.
Toddlers are discovering guns under piles of clothes and between couch cushions. Teenagers are obtaining untraceable ghost guns made from online kits. Middle school students are carrying handguns for protection.
Its like a normal thing, said Kim Sipes, whose 16-year-old nephew, Ramon Sosa, was shot and killed with his grandmother over the summer in Oklahoma City.
"It's like a normal thing."
That's where we are as a country.
It doesn't have to be that way. EVERY SINGLE STUDY INDICATES THAT STATES WITH STRONG GUN LAWS HAVE FEWER SHOOTINGS. The gunners among us will find some tiny exception somewhere and dispute that but they are wrong and have been brainwashed by their gun industry overlords. https://everytownresearch.org/rankings/compare/?states=CA,HI

(1,969 posts)We also have taken a much less aggressive model too policing higher crime areas.
Ironically, while less aggressive policing undoubtedly saves dozens of African American lives every year. It also seems to lead to death of thousands of additional African Americans, often woman and children.
This is the unfortunate outcome.
Perhaps we need to do the math. Because in the end it doesn't matter who shot you if you are dead.

(33,341 posts)It's just math.
Outside of the Crumbleys, the neglectful gun owners are rarely charged when children shoot children. "Oh, they've suffered enough".
Fuck that. If gun laws are supposed to be a deterrent that encourages responsible ownership, they need to be applied.

(10,847 posts)The 3 states with the lowest homicide rates are New Hampshire, Maine & Vermont.

Pointing out facts is not the same as "brainwashing".
Tickle
(2,520 posts)Everyone knows New Hampshire and Vermont have permissive gun laws. Illinois and New York have strong gun laws

(14,559 posts)I said that some gunner would cherry-pick the numbers and come up with this kind of bullshit objection. Do your own search, it's easy. You will find that with narrow exceptions strict laws equals less gun violence. Derp found three out of 50 states and studiously ignores the 47.
cinematicdiversions
(1,969 posts)very light gun laws (if at all) and very little gun violence.
I understand it does not fit the narrative. That was the posters point.

(58 posts)Is people with the Internet culture and the way teenagers are treating them like young adults when really their children and parents need to put the fear of God and lay down the law guns can be safely had any use for protection and hunting and also keep children safe when I was younger my dad used to take me hunting all the time in fact my dad bought me my own rifle at eight years old and I would keep it put in the gun cabinet and know gun safety. I feel if people an children are taught gun safety they wouldnt have to be as curious they would know what it is and that its dangerous also people should not leave loaded guns around unsecured either a holster with retention is best or a safe

Let's define "children" shall we?
Then let's define gang activity within the inner cities and the current state of unrest.
We're not bolstering our position here amongst the opposition by cherry-picking stats and redefining terminology. I realize my opinion won't be popular. It's simply reality.

(12 posts)You can't wind back the clock.
The technology is here.
You can write every law you want. You can stamp out every manufacturer you want. The sickness lies within society itself. Can't you see that?
This is why we're joked about so much now. The head-in-sand approach doesn't work. It never has. It never will.
I watched a documentary years ago about some scofflaw in EUROPE, who used 3D printers for gun parts and novel chemical processes to make gun barrels.
Yes I'm new here. I'm sure i'll be ostracized. Guns are never going away, no matter how much we want them to. Humans are violent by nature. If there's a mechanical advantage to be utilized to harm another, rest assured it WILL BE UTILIZED. IT IS, EVERY SINGLE DAY!
I guess my stay here will be short. I was hoping it wouldn't.
