I guess I have to root for buffalo. Why do people do this they do it at Florida State they do it for the Atlanta Braves and they're doing it for the Kansas City Chiefs

(34,112 posts)but as my son just said, consider that the stadium is mostly filled with people from Independence Mo (his words not mine) and other areas like that and the Chiefs can change their name and ask fans not to do it but you will never stop those people from doing it if they want to and they want to.

(32,611 posts)One of the Bills defensive players made a tackle and then taunted the player he tackled with the chop while he was on the ground.
A player using it is way worse than some idiot in the crowd.

(4,461 posts)They rebrand their logo and discourage fans from doing the tomahawk thing. Chiefs is a common word in our lexicon, it doesnt just pertain to First Nations. We have CPOs in the Navy, CEOs and CFOs, in PDs and FDs, and last but not least CiC.
So I would keep the name, but throw money at rebranding and outreach. The same with the Braves. We celebrate bravery everyday. OTOH, Washington had no choice, the name was offensive. And I dont know what to say about the FSU situation. Im a FL native, so we often took field trips to Seminole reservations when I was in elementary school. From what I understand the Seminole tribe were enthusiastic for the team to be named after them....but I have NEVER been a FSU fan.
Just my two cents.

(4,461 posts)Im just saying theres a way for teams to own up to their past mistakes and move forward. By not giving up their names, but redirecting branding in a positive way, they may educate more than if they just changed their name with little/no explanation.

(2,065 posts)The Seminole Tribe of Florida helps make the outfit for Chief Osceola and crowns the homecoming chief and princess in the homecoming game. The university and the tribe have been in continual dialogue over imagery associated with the name.

ever has a problem with it then the university will revisit the issue. The university has always maintained that position, even to the extent that it would change its nickname if the tribe ever says it should.mentalsolstice
(4,461 posts)However, as a kid growing up in south FL in the 60/70s, I often felt uncomfortable visiting their reservations. It felt like a circus show, I wished they could be independent without the audience.
And sorry I couldnt stand Bobby Bowden.
