REMEMBER WHEN NATALIE MAINES CRITICIZED THE PRESIDENT?
This is not just a random walk down country controversy memory lane. It was March 10, 2003, when Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks now the Chicks told a crowd in London that they were "ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas," referring to George W. Bush.
She made that remark during the run-up to the U.S. invasion of Iraq. The resulting backlash was swift and severe.

(2,903 posts)was considered an unpatriotic American by the Bush Administration Repukes.
Funny how Iraq is NEVER mentioned by the Repukes today. Oh except for if a former Vet is running for office and needs to put on their election material that they served there.

(14,962 posts)a very large proportion on the U.S. were suddenly big Toby Keith fans - the Patriot Act set sail without so much as a murmur - and Islamophobia was common as dirt. Oh - and despite the curious lack of 'weapons of mass destruction' found in Iraq - the American voter went on to reelect their very own village idiot (by a comfortable margin) a year and a half later. So - it's hard for me to place all of these folks in the role of 'unwitting dupes' - so much as willing and active participants.
And, getting back to the OP, support for the Chicks - myself not withstanding - was fairly muted, even in circles where they should have been able to expect more.

(28,191 posts)Some because they check their boxes for being a bigoted asshole and for others its because he benefits them financially and then for others its because they have been brainwashed (though for many it was only a light rinse) that he is the second coming of Christ and they must support him.

(7,839 posts)American mass media wanted blood and anyone standing in the way must be eliminated.
It was the worst of times, and now the same mass media is at it again with the not so subtle suppression of the daily news of a coup attempt. The disappointment in the Ukraine press and politicians playing down western war talk and western media war drums.
One thing TFG got partially right, the mass media IS the enemy of the common people
are enemies of the full truth.

(58,170 posts)culture is people voluntarily turning away from odious people and events.
But when THEY LEGISLATE the erasure of facts and people and rights and events, they call that family values.

What happened to John Kerry could be argued as cancel culture.
The Republican Party thrives on cancel culture, in my opinion.

I couldn't wait to order their music after this. History shows THEY were on the side of truth.

(9,173 posts)That was toward the end of a pretty good 16-year run of really listenable popular country music--The Dixie Chicks, the Judds, Garth Brooks, Patty Loveless, Brooks and Dunn, Tim McGraw, etc. Pretty much just garbage out there now.
