This may be the largest case of sex abuse by a single person in the US. A former NFL player wants victims' stories to be heardThroughout the bitter winter, during rain and snow, Jon Vaughn has alternated between sleeping in a tent or a campervan outside former University of Michigan President Mark Schlissel's house.
A former University of Michigan and NFL football player, Vaughn is one of more than 1,000 people --- mostly men -- who says they were abused by athletics doctor Robert Anderson, who worked for the university from 1966 to 2003 treating students across sports including football, track, and wrestling.
Anderson, who died in 2008, subjected students, 90% of whom were men, to "sexually abusive conduct" and invasive exams, including unnecessary genital and rectal examinations, according to a 2021 independent report commissioned by the university. Many of Anderson's victims were Black -- and survivors say this has played a part in why the abuse was allowed to continue for decades.
In his roles at the university, including director of its health service, team physician for the athletic department and a clinical instructor at the university's medical school, Anderson abused men and women from different racial backgrounds, undergraduate and graduate students, student athletes -- including a two-time Super Bowl champion and former world-class wrestler -- and members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community, the report found.
The university missed numerous opportunities to stop him over his 37 year long career, it concluded.
This month the university announced a $490 million settlement with over a thousand victims of Anderson's alleged sexual abuse, pending approval by the Michigan Board of Regents and the claimants.

If my memory serves me correctly.

(63,243 posts)Sandusky was known to be "creepy" for a long time. It's unimaginable that famed micromanager Paterno was unaware of Sandusky's crimes.

(18,131 posts)Once it became apparent that Paterno knew what was happening, but was keeping silent, he was fired.

(182,958 posts)This was before the transfer rules opened up. The Ohio State case was wrestlers where Im sure you cant leave because they can ruin you as a quitter in that hyper team oriented world. Total dedication and coaches are king.
As you know Joe Pa was more powerful than anyone at Ped State and probably bigger than the Governor. He clearly knew what Sandusky was doing. I forgot the guys name who exposed it but he stayed because he was a PSU guy for years. Paternities could have next to ended his career if he didnt offer kind words had the guy left.

(15,751 posts)is not going to risk it for an assistant coach even rumored to be a liability.
Paterno immediately reported it up the chain, to the guy who got disapeared. freeh couldn't find him.
The fix was in, engineered by the 'con governor. The fix report was out quickly, shifting the burden of proof of innocence on to Paterno. Helpled by anti-gay hate groups. It was awful.
The Penn State Board over time, seemed to recognize what happened and tried to make it up to the Paterno family.

(2,549 posts)In each of these instances, that's the prevailing sentiment.
It's no different than the Catholic, Jerry Falwell Jr., and dozens of mega-churches around the country. Someone very high up decides his organization's reputation is more important than the students, parishioners, or children.
And no one really ever gets into trouble.

The fact that this guy continued for over 37 years and the UM administration looked the other way.
He died in 2008, maybe he had HIV? One wonders ....

(12,000 posts)It's part of a plan that would see him becoming a part of the university's faculty. The offer is outlined in letters sent to Schlissel on Thursday from the leaders of U-M's medical school and the College of Literature, Science and the Arts. It's unknown whether Schlissel has accepted the terms.
Schlissel was fired as president earlier this month after a Board of Regents investigation into a violation of the school's new supervisor relationship policy. The investigation into Schlissel is continuing, including looking at whether he misused university funds in support of his relationship with an employee.

What is it with men in positions of power forcing kids to have sex with them? I don't understand it.

(3,829 posts)All were married. Four were fathers. One was a lay protestant youth minister but the others were non-religious. The one thing they had in common? They spent a lot of time around kids. One was my neighbor. He always had a lot of kids over at his house. Isn't that nice, I thought.
I could put any one of them in a crowded room and you would not pick them out. They look just like everybody else. Act like everybody else. I get a little frustrated when people talk about one type, one profession when they talk about molestation. These guys are in all walks of life. And women. Two of my relatives and one of my close friends were molested by women. A college friend was raped by her father.
A Pennsylvania professor who participated in the Pennsylvania diocesan review appeared on Maddow's show. She said most people do not understand how pervasive this is. Not just children, but also adults. People who have power over others.

(10,020 posts)into positions where they can DO this...teaching, coaching, youth ministry, etc. It's appalling. Parents, teach your children to report to you, no matter what their predator tells them.

(3,829 posts)I hate to say this, but when I hear how someone "loves" kids, I get a little queasy. I know plenty of people who work with kids would never hurt one. But I've seen it happen five times, and it wouldn't surprise me if I see it happen again in the same way. And I'm sure I will be blindsided again.
