snip-"The 22-year-old was not the intended subject of the investigation that the Minnesota SWAT team was conducting when it executed the search warrant Wednesday around 7 a.m., a law enforcement official told The Daily Beast."
snip-"In the footage, Locke can be seen wrapped in a blanket in a dark apartment with the television on. Police unlock the door and enter without knocking, shouting Police! Face forward! Locke stirs under the blanket, moving from the couch cushions to the floor. A pistol can be seen in his hand. Nine seconds elapse before police begin shooting."
snip-"According to a police report obtained by The Daily Beast, a Minneapolis SWAT team entered Lockes home at around 6:48 a.m. The officers, who were in uniform and wearing ballistic vests and tactical gear, are seen in the video using a key to enter the apartment before announcing their presence. Approximately nine seconds after entering the apartment, officers find Locke under a blanket.
The report and video both show that Locke was armed at the timebut while the report also states that he was aiming the firearm at officers, in the video the gun does not seem to be aimed at anyone but rather held toward the side of the couch he was sitting on. The video also shows an officer firing three shows while Lockestill wrapped in a blanketfalls to the floor."

(32,974 posts)snip-"The Star Tribune learned earlier Thursday that Locke, a Black man, was not the subject of the warrant and was in legal possession of his gun.
Police turned the key quietly. As soon as the door was opened, someone yelled, "Police search warrant! ... Get on the [expletive] ground!"
snip-"According to a dispatch report, police informed a dispatcher around 6:19 a.m. that they would be going into Apartment 701 at Bolero Flats. A comment added to the report showed that police would "AIR WHEN ABOUT TO EXECUTE THIS RISK NO NOISE EXPECTED" suggesting that they were carrying out a no-knock warrant. By 6:48 a.m., police called medics from Floor 7, indicating that someone was shot, the report showed. CPR was started three minutes later as officers brought the man, later identified as Locke, down to medics on the first floor. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead."

(21,756 posts)Should the guy have fired as fast and as often as he could?
Should he have had a bigger gun with more ammo in it?
There is no good ending here for the innocent guy sitting home watching TV. A military police force and guns for everyone is always going to end in a lot of people shot dead.
Insanity.

(26,328 posts)You would think cops would want less guns on the street.
When you think about it, it doesnt matter to them - they get to shoot anyone they please.

(7,410 posts)We wont fix this until they hold the people that authorize these actions accountable. The individual officer may react to a gun with lethal force. The police chief, judge who signed the warrant, and mayor should ultimately be held responsible for the actions of the weapons they send into peoples homes. Until the people and leadership that authorize these actions are held responsible for the outcome not much will change.

The settlements need to start being paid from their pension funds. Those no knock warrants should be granted in the rarest circumstances.
