'Voters are in a really sour mood': Poll finds Portlanders frustrated by homelessness, crime, city leadership
88% of respondents said quality of life is getting worse in Portland, with nearly 70% of people citing homelessness and crime as the citys biggest problems.
Andrew Hoan, CEO of Portland Business Alliance, said the results surprised him. "This is a historic response in terms of alignment of voters," Hoan said, adding that voters are focused like never before on whats wrong and feel current political leaders are not effective at bringing change.
"It shouldnt be lost that homelessness now is so ascendant and that crime has risen to the top of the issues," Hoan said. "That should not be taken for granted by anyone in public office, by anyone running for public office, or those managing our public resources."
Two Portland commissioners are up for re-election this spring. Only 18% of respondents said they'd vote for Jo Ann Hardesty, with 54% saying theyd vote for someone else
28% saying they were unsure.
Even fewer respondents, 10%, said theyd vote for Dan Ryan again, with 34% saying theyd vote for someone else
56% saying theyre not sure.

(17,538 posts)I am frustrated that in the richest country in the world that people have to live in cardboard homes so that people can build half-billion dollar yachts. The problem is similar to the banning of books; it feels better to pretend that the homeless, gays, blacks and foreigners don't exist.

(9,952 posts)And a whole lot of things are being done by homeless and yes, it is a struggle still even with the attempt at addressing. Not an easy issue with the numbers that gather up here in the NW.
That being said, I have a son looking to move to Portland in a couple months and I teeter back and forth if I want to move from Eugene to Portland. Homeless and crime is not on the list of considerations.

(27,120 posts)We were homeless in Seattle due to the high cost of housing / living.
This was in the 70s. My dad was working full time.
When the church we were squatting in finally kicked us out, my dad took us to Phoenix, AZ (where we couch-surfed for several years - my dad's family has been in AZ since before statehood - before my dad got a decent paying job).
I love the PNW. I've always wanted to go back, but who can afford to live there?
Apparently, only the uber wealthy.
