What's that all about ?

How about posting the tweet once ?

the duplicate tweets are replies to the original tweet. If you're careful, you can exclude the duplicates.

I like tweets, but only if they come with context. When I see a thread that is nothing but tweets, with no text, I hit reverse and back out of the thread.

On DU these tweets with no context don't display anything in my browser but a link to twitter which basically serves as an "Are you sure you want to go there?"

Usually my answer is "no" and I back right out of the thread.

I'll make exceptions for George Takei.

I have an Alcatel. My phone company gave it to me along with a $35 gift certificate when they stopped supporting my old phone, possibly because I ignored their "Urgent, we are discontinuing support of your phone..." and "Special offer" emails for about a year.

280 characters
In most cases, the text content of a Tweet can contain up to 280 characters or Unicode glyphs. Some glyphs will count as more than one character.

Counting characters | Docs | Twitter Developer Platform

November 8th 2017
On November 8th 2017, Twitter doubled the character limit from 140 characters to 280 characters 1; we will refer to this as the character limit change (CLC).Jul 9, 2019

I agree, you don't have to explain anything. But, when you make a claim that 140 characters isn't enough to post anything of substance, and then make several posts under 140 characters, it might be interesting for you to know that you are doing that.

You are trying to say that 140 characters isn't enough for discussion. Yet you are discussing in under 140 characters. Maybe you want to reconsider your judgement of the value of 140 characters. Or not. I don't care. But, as you pointed out, I don't owe you an explanation about my opinions.

And I'm responding to a 30 character post.

He's a person, BlackSkimmer!

Some Twitter "personalities" are like an STD I contracted from a not entirely consensual encounter. Why do I need to know Jeff Tiedrich's every iteration of "Person I dislike is poopy person!"

I think my favorites are "Media personality I've never heard of who is desperate for attention thinks very important thing you will forget by Tuesday is the most important thing you will read today."

What constant Twitter says to me is, "I'm too lazy to form my own thoughts, so here's someone else's middling take they threw out in between bites of toast." Don't think, just consume and regurgitate. It's not a particularly good media model, and I don't think the people I see most of the time are types I consider informed.

Also, a Forum for the Onion and Borowitz.. cuz posters tend to omit the source in their titles, which forces the reader to waste their time clicking on a headline which in the Before Times would otherwise be obviously sarcasm, but not anymore.

Which might not be a good thing. Sometimes we need a touch of humor to get through the day.

ETA - Sometimes having the satire not labeled adds to its impact. There are times I read a post and go, "Wow! They actually did that?!" and get to the link at the bottom and it's Borowitz or The Onion. Then I'm disappointed it's not real.

to be informed this is humor (or satire) is to me, respecting and consideration of readers.

I mostly skim through titles at a pace relative to the time I intend to spend on the forum.

These days, actual news is so beyond the pale ridiculous or absurd.. for instance the comment the LA Senator Kennedy made with regard to the Supreme Court nomination. something about knowing the difference between the Constitution and JC Crew cataloger.

Incredibly absurd and respectful. Could have been the Onion but it wasn't.

So it's not easy to presume if a title is fact or fiction. I remember a time when the source was always included in the title if it was the Onion or Borowitz. It's no longer the norm, unfortunately.

Many are highly rec'd, viewed and commented on.

If you don't like them, place the people who post a lot of them on ignore. Shite, I post tweets, but I have a couple of people who post "Tweet of the ______" on ignore (also because said people tend to post duplicates consistently/constantly). Even when they make it to the front page, I don't bother clicking on them.

If you want a tweet-free forum, maybe spend more time viewing/participating in the Editorials & Other Articles forum.

Twitter is what you make of it, imo. So is DU, for that matter.

The person who started the tweet thread obviously had some strong opinion about the tweet, but what????

Often there's not so much as a "Hey, I agree with this guy!" or even a "Yeah, Trump sucks."

And trolls frequently use tweets to post their crap in a "Hey, can you believe this!" fashion, merely to spread their bullshit around.

I read DU for the reasoned opinions, not so much clever chatter, although I do participate in the clever chatter as well.
