I believe that's why fringe and third-party "progressive" candidates have received an abundance of financial support from the GOP (and Russia). It's just another example of how (for a price, and for personal gain) people are willing to do and say things that create an atmosphere of negativity. Negativity generates apathy. Apathy discourages voter turnout. Low voter turnout gives Republicans a chance to steal the elections.
