was the dignity of the Presidency. Regaining that is going to take years, or even decades. He has sullied the very office he held, covering it with the filth that surrounds him.

(66,467 posts)But I agree with you. It's going to take years, or even decades, until there's no one left who believes anyone like TFG is even remotely worthy of the office of President of the United States.

(10,095 posts)Our allies know that Republicans could reelect Trump, or someone even worse, who would undo any Democratic agreements and destroy alliances, all while a complacent Congress does nothing to stop him because they know he will sign every tax cut for the wealthy they pass and support every extremist right-wing nominee for the Supreme Court that Leonard Leo of the Federalist Society chooses to nominate.
Until the Republican party in its current iteration of authoritarian rule is destroyed and is no longer viewed as a threat to Western democracies, we will not regain the faith and trust of the world.

(10,130 posts)President Eisenhower and President Kennedy seemed revered - on a higher pedestal.
Reagan, Clinton & Bush had their issues.
Obama was smeared.
Then, worst of all, we have Trump.
Biden's getting smeared by the media.
MineralMan
(146,336 posts)President Obama went a long way toward restoring the dignity of the office. However, Trump sullied the Presidency from the moment he walked into the White House. President Biden is working hard to clear away the stench, but it will take time.

(10,130 posts)He did go a long way to restoring the dignity of the office - from our perspective.
He was the kind of President I always hoped for.
The birthers, the racists, etc smeared him with lies from a different, disgraceful perspective undermining his efforts while bunches of the media played along or amplified those lies.
That's where I'm coming from. I bet you're not far off.

(146,336 posts)So I believe anyhow. Trump's constant lying destroyed the dignity of that office. He could not be trusted to speak the truth about anything, so he destroyed everyone's trust in the office itself. As you say, it will take a long time to restore that.

(9,670 posts)They didn't want a President. They wanted a right wing radio talk show host yelling at the "enemy" and strutting around like a peacock. They got that and so much more from Trump.
Trump is a reflection of the worst of us. A minority of us, to be sure, but with our anachronistic Constitution, minority rule seems to have its place in a democracy. There is an element in our country that wants to blow the whole thing up and they've been handed the opportunity to realize their dream.

That goes beyond the fact that he was a disgraceful president. Crimes committed like that one, if not challenged and prosecuted, create precedents for those who would do more than sully our democracy

(11,624 posts)The fake gold tarnish of the capital 'T' which doesn't have the high-class connotation TFG's family thinks they've attached to the 'brand'. It stands for shoddy, corrupt, parasitic, Russian and American mobs, poser, loser, and low class.
We will have to earn "the dignity of the Presidency" back. So far I think Biden is doing great but it seems the media is complicit with the Republicans in trying to paint him as an old lame duck. That's all the republicans are good for--putting up barricades and whining loudly.
We've got to keep cheering on and supporting our hard-working team of democrats from the top down. There are more of us then TFG's supporters.

(10,130 posts)Trump did sully the office. No question. Worst ever.
But he didn't do it by himself. Too many in a position to do something about it, maybe held their nose as they looked the other way or enabled him.
Trump damaged the dignity of the office with the majority of Republicans blessing.

(91 posts)To me the dignity of the presidency is still there. One "man" cannot take away what 44, now 45, other presidents have established. Did he (the fat orange fuck) spit on the office? Certainly! Did he tear up on Constitution (among other docs apparently lol) Of course! The presidency is a dignified institution. The last 4 years prior to Biden was like a big skid mark in your underwear. Its disgusting but you wash them and move on. We just can't shit ourselves again.

(860 posts)On second thought, WE (Americans) turned it into a gameshow by voting him in (electoral college). We need to look at the causes and condition that allowed a festering boil like him into the office in the first place. What is happening here?

(11,572 posts)At his absolute best, Drumpf could have never, ever lived up to that, but I doubt we saw his "best"...which is and was more or less appalling. OTOH, I think we saw very little of his worst, either.
All that aside - cast your mind back to the debacle that Bush 43 created where foreign policy and international goodwill had stood instead. It did not take long at all for President Obama to turn that around and personally become the most admired man in the world. Even becoming the 100th most admired would have been a decent result, considering the deep pit in which he started.
As good a President as Joe Biden may be, I'm afraid he doesn't have the charisma of his illustrious Democratic forebear. But someone in the office who merely offered his hand to other countries and can string together ideas and coherent sentences is going to seem statesmanlike by comparison, at the worst.

(32,790 posts)Most of us had an inkling even before he got in the White House. But the "grab 'em by the pussy" tape left no doubt in anyone's mind, and it's been a long slow 5-year slide. He hit rock bottom on January 6th last year.
Now we Democrats once again have a huge clean-up job, and it's been made so much worse by Chump.

There will be articles galore. There will be books. There will be doctoral theses about - well, this grotesque pile of feces ( just for the joy of rhyming, here )!
As much as I wish he winds up as little more than a bug splat on the windshield of history, well be cursed with his name and likeness when our grandchildren are our age. Lest anybody doubt, consider how the Adolf Hitler reference still comes up in discussion, and that infernal beasts heyday began almost a century ago.

(81,519 posts)The worst thing that could ever happen to him is that nobodys talking about him anymore. That wont happen for at least a few decades - which is an optimistic but probably unrealistic dread of mine.
Human nature being what it is, hes touched something awfully deep and buried in the dark hearts of too many people. And they arent letting go of that fiendish validation anytime soon. Because one aspect of that human nature is pride - manifesting in the refusal to admit to being wrong.
And NOBODY wants to admit they were wrong, much less that theyve been totally HAD. At the end of a fork. THATS a huge bump in the road of human nature.
