(23,982 posts)There has to be some penalty involved.
The police handed out fliers yesterday notifying the truckers that what they're doing is newly permanently against the law with up to $100,000 fine and a year in jail. Probably Canadian dollars.
It also said that they were considering revoking their license to drive commercially.

Her email had been hacked and several front orgs with names like "Protect Our freedom" and others like it were all using her address. And they were from the US and many other parts of the globe -- especially east European countries.

They have to make it hurt enough so this crap never happens again.

Serge, just noticed this in an article in The Guardian....
On Friday, the Ontario premier, Doug Ford, declared a state of emergency in the province that will allow his cabinet to impose $100,000 fines and up to one year in jail as punishments against people who continue to illegally block roads, bridges, walkways and other critical infrastructure.
Chief Justice Geoffrey Morawetz of the Ontario superior court issued an injunction giving protesters blocking cross-border traffic until 7pm Friday to clear out. However, the deadline came and went.
Windsor police immediately warned that anyone blocking the streets could be subject to arrest and their vehicles could be seized.

(14,766 posts)over these antivaxxers. It's pure selfish and self-centered behavior helped along by right-wing corporate media and Russian trolls. They won't drag those trucks into the river but let's hope they impound a large number for a very long time.
Can't recall anything else in my 74 years to match this degree of a very large group of people not giving a damn about their fellow Americans. Obviously, there's a substantial group of Canadians with similar beliefs.
I cannot imagine what will happen if we ever go to war again.......

(19,960 posts)The country is so polarized now I don't know if it can ever be put back together.
Humpty-Trumpty pushed everyone off the wall, and you I agree Putin had a hand in that. Of course TFG was so eager to get his tacky name on a hotel in Red Square, he would have done anything - and did - to please his buddy Putin. Small consolation that TFG'S dream will probably never come to fruition.
You're one year older than myself, KY, and I don't know about you, but I'm glad I'm closer to the finish line than the start line. I feel bad for my children and grandchildren. They're going to have to sort this mess out somehow.

(14,766 posts)and I hope I remember to show some gratitude every day. Thank goodness for animals, nature, children, music and chocolate....
You and I remember the days before internet and globalization of everything, most businesses were local, America made most everything we needed, people acted like ladies and gentlemen and gross vulgarity was rare, and politics was only discussed around election time. All I know is that folks were much more unselfish, serene and content.
I just have one grandchild and like you, worry about her future. Further divisiveness and climate change will make for a rough ride.
Regarding Putin's internet troops, one event stays vivid in my mind from the 2015 presidential election period. Our government internet sleuths proved without a doubt that his infamous trolls were responsible for starting race riot in Texas, just by planting false and inflammatory shit on popular Twitter and Facebook sites. Seems that our unfettered freedoms are killing us and destroying community and democracy, yet some very selfish idiots are blockading international trade over getting a vaccine no more risky than a measles or flu jab.
Enough of my Sunday ranting. I'm grateful for DU and to have laundry to finish for me and my son today.....
Have a good, peaceful Valentines week and take care of yourself......

(10,343 posts)Better triple that cost! Depending on how badly the trucks have been "Locked up", driveshafts have to be removed, brakes "backed off" or "aired up" from another truck. Trucks will have to be impounded somewhere.
The occupants of the truck need to be removed, before this happens, or it's demo derby time.

(5,329 posts)At least, when people marched against the Vietnamese war, it was against an unjust war that was killing hundreds of thousand of Vietnamese and 58,000 American soldiers.
The trucker protests are against being asked to wear a mask and get vaccinated so hundreds of thousands more are unlikely to die.
We live in an upside down world.

(19,960 posts)I believe you're correct. All of these "protests" didn't arise organically. Someone has been stirring the flames of unrest, and there's always one country on the top of that short list: Russia.

(31,236 posts)but Russian disinformation isn't even needed now that Fox and others are pushing to take down our democracy. They have taken Russia's side in the Ukraine conflict. These are really kind of small protests. Just that they get a ton of media attention. If they were fighting for better wages, you would probably only see 1 or 2 media outlets covering them.
The corporate media never cover war protests or strikes like this.

That's not to disagree with your post and say that they're hiding their faces out of fear, of course. -6C is still uncomfortable if you're out in it for an extended time like these cops are, particularly if it's windy.

Once, after they opened up the eastern span of the Bay Bridge to pedestrians, a buddy and I decided to bike across it to Treasure Island in April.

(4,002 posts)Get some signs and stage a march. Dont block commerce and traffic. Park your trucks somewhere legal and hit the sidewalk or march down the street. This whole seizing commerce BS is BS. Arrest the drivers, impound the trucks, make the impound fee $10k a day, and go from there. If they dont settle and recover their truck in 30 days sell it. Easy.
