The human death toll will be catastrophic.
Any "leader" that gives such an order, to declare war on a democracy, a democratic nation. An order that will kill 100,000+ people.
is a "leader" that deserves to be..

(20,631 posts)did to Iraq also constituted a war crime. We'll never know how many civilians died as the result of "shock and awe".

(2,971 posts)There are a number of different atrocious acts which can be classified as war crimes, but simply attacking another nation is not one of them.

(758 posts)Attacking a democracy through war is not taken lightly by the international community.
When I referred to war crimes in my OP, much of that is from what would likely be a horrific human death toll and the atrocities committed by Russia to overthrow Ukraine.
If sanctions have been imposed by the UN forbidding Russia from attacking, then it would be a war crime for Russia to attack.

(32,100 posts)The UN can't impose sanctions because Russia is a member of the Security Council and has a veto on any actions.

(4,629 posts)What about the war crime known as a war of aggression? Thats a type of war where one nation initiates an unprovoked attack on another nation.
A war of aggression was declared a war crime at Nuremberg.

(7,437 posts)Not many here supported that war, so this comment isn't particularly helpful. Whether or not attacking Iraq was a war crime is independent of whether or not Attacking Ukraine would be. Unless you are just trying to justify turning a blind eye to Russian aggression.

Fact is the Iraq invasion and occupation was illegal.

Any questions?

(7,437 posts)They are most DEFINITELY not neo-Nazis. I can;t take this Tankie bullshit seriously.
I'm pretty disgusted by some on the left propping up bullshit Russian crap.

(13,231 posts)Bushs war destroyed the international legal constraints on wars of aggression and also effectively abolished the Geneva Conventions on the treatment of prisoners and protection of civilians.
We are reaping the results of our unilateralism.

Bush, Dick Cheney, Rummy falsified and fabricated evidence to "declare" war.
We've all sadly spent the past almost 20 years demanding a war crimes investigation and trial for the entire Bush cabal. Like you, I wish we had better results. I'm with you!

Of course, only the winners get to decide whether the war was justified or aggressive. So, yes, if we win a war that Russia starts in Ukraine, to expand their borders, and we apprehend Putin, in theory we could try him for a capital crime.

Putin, like Trump, tries to keep a legal excuse for his aggressive moves. "It wasn't my troops, it was just a motorcycle gang." Or rumored False Flag provocations.
Most Ukrainians do not want to rejoin a Soviet Union. "Hey, kid, do you want to do graduate study in Paris -- or Moscow?"
