Neither interests me this time around and I can't explain that except it seems we have bigger fish to fry (more important things to care about).
Am I alone with these feelings or have others come to the same realization?
I wonder what the ratings say about these two events?
Oh - and Putin will invade the Ukraine when it's announced TFG is being indicted.
Such an invasion will take the indictment and the J6 committee's investgation off the front page. Just my humble opinion.

(113,961 posts)saw the corruption in the ioc and usoc, and usa gymanstics.
I've always found football boring and the corruption in the Olympics ruins it for me.

(5,164 posts)On a scale of importance now. The sb/ football have never been important to me, in fact I hate that stuff truth be told. I used to watch winter olympics but we didnt this year at all, I couldn't be bothered. They do generate income etc though so I guess on that level they matter.
It is hard to say what is going to happen on the Ukraine matter.

(22,829 posts)Never. I've managed to go through life without ever seen a whole game. i've seen bits and pieces over the years. Usually at other people's homes. But I've never actually seen the whole game. And I'm in my mid 60s.

(16,657 posts)I practically never watch football, and the Superbowl is no exception, so no change there.
Turning my back on the Olympics is a change for me, however. I tried watching the Olympics once (men's figure skating) but just couldn't get interested. Have not turned it on since. The idea of this international event being held in a country with such a horrific human rights track record as China makes the whole thing feel like a farce to me. I'm not sure if thats the whole reason for my lack of interest, but it's the only thing I've been able to put my finger on.

(57,073 posts)Allowing Russians to compete, despite doping disgusts me.
Judges kissing Russian skaters' asses disgusts me. I'd read the pair fell & still was awarded gold.
No interest in football either. Personifies patriarchy, imo.

(19,286 posts)The US is obsessed with sports. Walk into any bar in the country and 9 out of 10 people sitting there will be able to go into great detail on who the backup quarterback is for the local football team, but only 1 in 5 can name their Congressperson. 24 hour sports networks, bigger and bigger TV events. Somewhere in the 80s people stopped caring about civics as much as they did sports. It's a big part of why we are in the mess we're in.
The only good thing about it now is it's the only venue that left and right can interact peacefully nowadays. Tailgating for the big game brings all walks of Americans together.

(5,010 posts)I can have two thoughts in my head at the same time. I can be worried about things that are going on and also watch a football game.
Are you telling me that you do NOTHING other than worry about Putin and TFG? No reading. No watching anything other than the news? If so, relax a bit for your own mental health.

(9,193 posts)Why do my friends keep posting their Wordle results on FB?
As long as perspective is kept, I don't think it's a problem. I watched the Superbowl with my tablet propped up on my desk while I did homework. With the Olympics, I'll check out a YouTube replay if something interesting happens.
Neither activity exactly takes time away from more important things in my life (school, work, social life, etc.).
Hell, just posting here or Reddit or wherever isn't exactly the best use of my time. I do it because I'm bored, or taking a break, or just blatantly wasting time. It isn't significant or changing anything. I just spent 10 mins hunting down the North and South Book 2 theme song on Spotify and realizing I can buy the entire trilogy of the old TV mini-series for $10. Whut? Those recorded from TV fuzzy ass VHS tapes were a huge part of my childhood! (It was not a mystery when I got a history degree).
It's when people think these things are life or death struggles that's kind of worrisome. "If you like something I don't, you are a terrible person." That's when I get bugged. When people think others aren't allowed to enjoy things because they don't approve, and they start making attempts to control the culture on account. Nah.
Life's rough enough. If we can be invested in some sliver of happiness, that's ok.
I mean, this is great:
"I want my freedom, you can't force me to love you!"
That is just gay camp for me. (Ok, so no surprise I ended up gay with a history degree).

(3,491 posts)as well. Pretty much only follow college basketball and football anymore. Also, Kerrigan won the gold in 92, the mess with Harding was 94.

(11,662 posts)I don't care who wins the medal count and I don't even uniformly root for the USA all of the time if there are other athletes I like for whatever reason after hearing their stories, but I still tune in a few nights a week at some point because I find it entertaining.

(18,925 posts)Pros into the Olympics my interest has dwindled. Now it appears if you get caught cheating they will either punish the other competitors (by denying them their ceremony and mailing their medals) or if you are the host team just change the rules mid-competition.
I am not a football fan so only saw four plays while near a TV tuned to the game. In two of the four plays I saw blatant penalties that were not called. At least pro wrestling has the decency to have their refs stop and tie their shoe or ogle the eye candy at ringside so they have an excuse to not see cheating.

(58,792 posts)but I can no longer watch much sports broadcasting for generic "love of the sport."
I've never been big on the Olympics, and over the past couple of decades or so it has become far too politicized.

(4,413 posts)The older I get, the less I care about any sports.
When you're a kid it's easy to get caught up in the pomp and pageantry of the parade of nations and the myth of top performing athletes trying to break world records and the rags to fame stories but now, obviously, the Olympics haven't led to peace or better understanding between nations and there are fewer and fewer records that people are capable of breaking and it just seems like a waste for these kids to be spending all of this time trying to do a slightly twistier vault or ski jump .0001mm further instead of getting a real education and having a childhood.
I think competition in general is something we need a lot less of in our society. It feels antiquated when the problem we're facing like Covid and climate change and income inequality and threats to democracy are not problems that are going to be solved by one preson being the GOAT.

(4,533 posts)People I know who watch sports have kids who play them. We don't have kids, maybe that's the missing link. I couldn't sleep last night so I spent a total of about 5 minutes checking out half time and commercials, nothing memorable there.
