Age Discrimination and Housing- Needing to Vent

Short story, I need to vent because of rental/leasing today. Yes, prices have gone through the roof and that's a problem.

It's an extremely bigger problem for people on fixed income. My parents are pretty lucky. They have both Social Security and retirement from their school system jobs. And yes, the time has come to move them near me due to age and health.

But yeah, back to those prices. Inflexible rental/property management companies are sticking to a rent should be 30-35% of monthly income rule. My parents just want to rent for 12 months while they get their house sold and find a new one here. They also have lots of assets and that income is secure unlike a 20yo with a job.

Annoyed AF and either going to have to cosign, or come up with a 'fake' job for a 70+ yo. because they miss an arbitrary target by a few hundred dollars.

That's what it's come down to...

And frankly, they are pretty lucky. I don't know how you would even make it in this climate if you are closer to the edge with salary.

I'm selling my house and moving into an apartment. I'll have almost a quarter of a million in an investment account, but because of my income, I only qualify for a studio apartment. I feel lucky to get that. The rentals have gone effing crazy in Oakland.

Still, I'll have a pretty, air conditioned place with a washer and dryer in the unit. I wish I had more space. However, there are huge common areas in and around the building, including a dog park. I'll be able to play with other people's dogs.

I can only manage what I have because I got a nice pension from my employer. Other folks are effed.

2. Maybe the property management companies would be more flexible if they were paid in advance.

Or if your parents offered to pay a larger-than-normal security deposit, if either of those are an option for them.

Now if you can talk to the property owner that I've found is the best way to get around those income ratioes.
