New American Research Group poll in SC: Romney 29%, Gingrich 25%, Paul 20%, Perry 9%, Santorum 7%

Mitt Romney leads the GOP presidential field in South Carolina, but Newt Gingrich is close behind and Ron Paul and Rick Perry have posted impressive gains over the past week, according to an American Research Group poll released on Friday.

Romney came in at 29 percent, followed by Gingrich at 25 percent, Paul at 20 percent, Perry at nine percent, Rick Santorum at seven percent and Jon Huntsman at one percent.

Paul has climbed 11 percent in the last week and Perry has gained seven percent. Santorum, who was tied for second in last week’s poll at 24 percent, plummeted into fifth place in the current poll.

Romney and Gingrich have remained steady in a week over week comparison.

1. Hard to believe that Perry is doing better than Santorum.

I thought SC had 60% of the republican primary voters who defined themselves as evangelicals?

3. Perry is the only authentic Southener in the race and Santorum is Catholic.

Ron Paul isn't an Israel firster who wants war with Iran.

I grew up 40 miles from SC in Athens, GA. This is a whole different game. Perry is the candidate for the Bob Jones University crowd.

2. Two points ...

1) Santorum is Catholic ..... Southern Baptists hate Catholics slightly less than they hate Mormons .... Catholics and Jews are the more traditional targets of hatred by Southern Baptists ....

2) It would be quite grand if Gingrich were to take South Carolina from Mittens ...... Oh to dream ....
