Here's a transcript of a Russian soldier's last text messages to his mother that Ukraine's Ambassador to the UN just read out from screenshots at the emergency session of the UN General Assembly

(14,971 posts)Direct your comments to him. There have been plenty of reports of young Russian soldiers not wanting to be there. Most of them are 1 year conscripts.

(5,969 posts)Whatever the subject is, you always see specific posters have a special bias that for some reason is always directed against Ukraine and always in favor of Russia. Every single time. The special ones are those who only get their insinuations out but rarely take a stand. It's pathetic.

(51,308 posts)The Twitter thread is quite illuminating.
I remember American POWS making statements against the US. The North Vietnamese made a big deal out of those.
Sorry I wasnt more clear.

Two sides of the same coin.

(51,308 posts)Several stories have come out that have already been proven untrue.
Actually, being cool is not believing every single thing either side says. Time will always tell.
I support Ukraine, as I think we all do. But clear eyed vision and critical thinking are always important
even more so now.

I understand your skepticism.
The Snake Island story turned out not to be true.
You shouldnt be attacked for taking fog of war stories with a grain of salt until they are proven.
Thereve been several others proved to be false. Time will tell if this is true or not.

(6,477 posts)Let me be clear. I support Ukraine in this and hope the Russian advance is crushed and turned back. But some of this propaganda is so silly that I'm not going to be quiet about it.

(51,308 posts)I also support Ukraine.
Like you, I believe - as the old saying goes none of what I hear and about half of what I see.
A very old lady told me that when I was very young.

(10,053 posts)He told those young soldiers that they would be welcomed by the Ukrainians, probably even relieved they came to save them. How soul crushing to learn the truth.

Well, they did get welcomed with open arms, just not the kind they were told to expect.

(4,425 posts)These Russian conscript troops have no idea why they are being ordered to fight a war against Ukraine. Neither do most Russians. They are all frightened and horrified.
And like most of the world, they are anxiously waiting for the news that Putin has had a terrible random accident and has passed away.
erronis
(15,241 posts)they are doing what they're told to do.
Call it duty, chain of command, love of brothers-in-arms.
This is why the armies like those 16-20 year olds. They don't have enough experience to say "This is shit. Fuck you."
Anyone remember "fragging" in Vietnam? If I were a soviet/russian officer I would be worried.
jaxexpat
(6,822 posts)whathehell
(29,067 posts)Not by everyone, and in a free society, soldiers can access information on a war's cause for themselves.
As to the Vietnam "fragging" incidents, those arose out of personal conflicts between individual soldiers
-- It had zero to do with higher ups view of them as "expendable".

(51,308 posts)Even if I believed all the rest, no, not that line.
My uncle fought in WWII. My mom saved his letters, and I still have them. Youd think he was out for a jolly day at a picnic from the lovely upbeat letters he wrote to his mother, my grandmother.
He fought throughout the war and then at D-day, where he lost a hand. They knew nothing of this until he came home. And even then, he simply never spoke of it.
I find it very hard to believe a son would write that to his mother. Not a soldier.
niyad
(113,293 posts)everything he thought he knew, everything he had been told by those whom he was supposed to be able to trust, was a lie. He saw people dying in front of him, perhaps under him. Having dealt with veterans with PTSD, particularly from the Vietnam fustercluck, this does not surprise me in the least.
From the sound of it, he was a young conscript, not a battle-hardened soldier.

(9,986 posts)Russia is a police state, and the protesters have been incredibly brave to protest the war in public knowing that many of them may be beaten and jailed. It would be virtually impossible for the people to overthrow Putin because he has decades-long control mechanisms in place. But the military and his oligarchs are another matter. They need to act because the world is standing against them and sanctions will destroy the Russian economy. The oligarchs might start paying attention when some of their yachts are seized by European authorities.

(10,123 posts)There are multiple videos of what appears to be civilians of Ukraine walking/standing in front of Russian tanks
There was a video of a tank running over a civilian car with a driver it it - supposedly in Ukraine recently.
There is a photo essay of a 6 year old girl dying and then dead from the shelling - supposedly in Ukraine recently..
There are photos/videos of civilian areas bombed or being bombed - supposedly in Ukraine recently.
There is a recent report of 5,000 Russian soldiers refusing to go to Ukraine.
There are videos of captured Russians claiming they didn't know what they were ultimately asked to do - supposedly in Ukraine recently.
etc
So the report of the Russian soldier's texts lines up with a bunch of other alleged evidence about this war.
And shouldn't shock anyone familiar with Putin.
If the Russians continue to fail to take Kyiv, it could get much nastier ...

Each of them should be hanging in the square tomorrow. And I'm sure there'd be no dearth of Russians willing to pull the lever.

(6,679 posts)I have no doubt some Russian soldiers ... maybe even most ... don't want to be there. Don't have many good choices etc etc. I would expect there are 100's upon 1000's of riveting stories.
This one may or may not be real. Oh I would like to believe everything I see with my own eyes. Unfortunately we live in a time fake is pretty easy.
I say if it is true, my heart goes out to his mom.
