Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson, the former Chief of Staff to General Colin Powell, appeared on The Ed Show Friday night, where he responded to Romney surrogate John Sununu‘s recent remark that Powell’s endorsement of the President may be based on race.

In reply, Wilkerson had strong words about the role race plays in his own party’s views on the President:

Let me just be candid: My party full of racists. And the real reason a considerable portion of my party wants President Obama out of the White House has nothing to do with the content of his character, nothing to do with his competence as Commander in Chief and President, and everything to do with the color of his skin. And that’s despicable.

1. I am conflicted about Wilkerson and his pronouncements

On the one had, it is great to have examples of Republicans who point out the assholery of the Republican party. And it makes them mad and angry - OK, madder and angrier .


On the other hand I would have more respect for Wilkerson if he were saying :"The Republicans - the party I used to belong to - is full of racists" I mean how high does his blood pressure have to get before he quits the GOP? Or will it get so high that he just explodes before our eyes? And will we have time to get the children out of the room?

2. He should be just as angry at how the GOP treats his fellow TROOPS.

3. If my party were full of racists

I would immediately change my party affiliation and never associate myself with that party again. If only die-hard racists were left in the Republican Party, it would eventually go the way of the Whigs.
