I live out in the country where guns are always sounding. But today, a minute ago it sounded

Last edited Sat Mar 26, 2022, 05:09 PM - Edit history (1)

like a friggin' cannon went off. Shook the windows 1/4 mile away. WTF are these people using to "target practice" with?

What kinds of weapons are illegal in this country? Wow!!! It just happened again! Huge boom! How does the FBI know who is a threat?

This shit scares me to death. My dogs are hiding under the house. I might join them.

5. So it's not illegal? I don't know if that's what they're doing, but it sounds like a cannon.

I live in an extremist area. Lots of white supremacists and KKK types. This makes me feel really unsafe, but I'm scared to call the FBI or anyone, because there are so many nazi types infiltrated into that agency. I don't want to put myself in harms way by reporting this kind of explosives going on.

My husband commented that this "neighbor" has probably gone through $1,000 worth of ammunition in the past hour and a half. They have a lot of seriously automatic machine guns or some such...fires a whole slew of huge bullets in really quick succession.

11. So, tannerite is a binary explosive

The two powders sold in the kit separately aren't explosive. It only becomes an explosive after you mix the two. And then, it only explodes when hit by a bullet travelling over 1,000 feet per second.

Lots of loopholes, I know, but that's why it's technically legal, even though it's as powerful as dynamite.

44. Not Quite, But Packs Quite A Punch Nonetheless

2# of tannerite (904 grams) is equivalent to one stick of dynamite.
Commercially available dynamite comes in 190-200g per stick.
So, it's about 23% the energy release of dynamite. Much higher than gun powder.
Also, a projectile needs to be closer to mach 2 to detonate tannerite. (600 meters/sec.)
A subsonic round won't do it.
All that said, the law should be rewritten to restrict tannerite sales. It's still a bigtime explosive and mixing the two components can be done by anyone with a kitchen spatula & a plastic pail.
It's definitely under-regulated.

72. They're sold over the counter as "targets".

No special license needed, nothing signed to register it. My brother bought a case of the stuff (he's a gun nut, but not a crazy gun nut, if that makes sense). I've been with him when he detonated it and IT IS LOUD! I'm from the country orriginally and I've heard farmers using dynamite to blow stumps etc. and it's just as loud as dynamite. YouTube is full of Tannerite explosions.

I imagine this is what the OP heard.

3. Tannerite or something similar...

or an actual cannon, though likely a black powder one

Tannerite is an explosive target, legal in all but 2 or 3 states I think.

Cannons are legal to own, especially black powder cannons. Black powder guns and cannons are entirely unregulated by Federal law since they aren't considered firearms.

Far greater likelihood that it's tannerite or something similar.

6. Technically......yes, sorta

Explosives like that would be considered Destructive Devices, which are regulated somewhat similarly to machine guns. Both fall under the National Firearms Act. Registration and approval by the ATF would be needed, just like a machine gun. There would be additional storage requirements as well.

There are civilian owned grenades and grenade launchers, as well as artillery, and tanks with live main guns. But just because its technically legal to own doesn't mean you can get one. Someone still has to sell them to you and Raytheon isn't going to be selling them to anyone but the government or entities approved by the government.

It's likely tannerite. The neighbors have a gravel pit about a quarter mile from my property in south AL. They explode tannerite in large quantities that knocks the tools and other stuff off the walls of my shop and terrifies the dogs. I've called the sheriff and they say "It's likely tannerite".

Sorry.

Its still an explosion. Standing too close is dangerous. Putting inside something that then blowing it up with tannerite still produces shrapnel. There was a guy on youtube who lost his leg because he shot a lawnmower packed with tannerite and the shrapnel cut his leg off.

75. Dang. Clearly not good enough.

Chewy carries a noise generator which has several diffrent sounds - not as many as some noise generators, but I use it for myself and all need is white noise. It is very sturdy, can be hung on a hook or peg, The battert is recharged through aUSB cord; I got nan adapter plug to keep it connected to house currant at all times.

have used a noise genrator to sleep since I was 20 (76now) and I can testify that they can block noises which are louder than they are. That might not go all the way up to even dynamite, but it does wotk for normal gunshots even if they are quite close. I lived for about a year (in the early nineties) in an apartment building where apparently there were not infrequent gunshots - I didn't know it until I moved out and someone mentioned it as apossible reason for my moving. HUbs had not heard any either. We were both astonished.

I have no pets but shop at Chewy when possible because they are just such nice people.

17. Last year I was out in my woods cutting firewood. Next to my back property

is a country church with a huge lawn that borders my woods. There was an old man on a John Deere tractor mowing the church grounds. I was deep in a hollow cutting up a huge Honey Locust tree. I stopped to take a break and was sitting on the tree stump when across the hollow on top the hill that old man with his tractor running started shooting his hand gun blindly into my woods. I stood up with both arms waving and screaming to get his attention. He couldn't hear me over his tractor noise. I started up my small John Deere and turned on my flashers and headlights. He pretended he didn't see me and turned around and got on his tractor and drove off. Whenever I hear gun shots outside now, it scares the shit out of me.

82. I shoot wild pigs with mine, of course I don't think I am crazy.

Pigs are active at night so we use night vision. You would be shocked at what pigs can do to a soybean field in a night.

And the occasional coyote gets shot.

37. All these weapons are legal because the Supreme Court ruled on a comma in the 2nd Amendment.

It said that the amendment has two parts, the first is about the militia and the second part is about the right of the people.

41. Those brilliant founding fathers shoud have used a period...

...according to the less than a Supreme Court.

A court of last resort, an end of the line, but nothing 'supreme' about this one generation's court of failed men.

No women were responsible for the unmaking of the precedent of "sanity".

39. Humm! Shooting Tannerite

Sounds like a great cover story, a cover-up for the occasional illegal homemade good-ol-boys bomb test.

42. I'm gonna go with a .50BMG rifle of some sort as my first guess.

The explosives would be the second.

43. One if my MAGAt neighbors shoots about every afternoon.

Some local guys shot several hundred dollars worth of
Tannerite all at once one day it shook the ground a mile away. The 911 got several calls people thinking a gas well blew.

47. As a civil and revolutionary war re-enactor for artillery, I can state that cannons are unregulated.

I can own and fire real cannons without a permit or license in most states. Massachusetts has a license, but it has no fee and is valid for 5 years. Itís basically an exam and background check.

78. Yes.

Our 1841 mountain howitzer would have in real war fired spherical case, but our target practice in competitions has been with solid shot. We've also demonstrated canister, which is brutal. We set up cardboard targets and counted the hits. Yikes!

A canon is a camera, a religious rule, or "Row, row, row your boat."

66. Some people put some tannerite in their targets...

... to add some spice to their shooting sessions.

Like, putting some inside old tin cans so when you score a hit there's an immediate indication of it.

Understand that shooting paper doesn't give audio or visual feedback and trying to see where bullets are making holes is difficult, so shooting steel targets that move or fall over is popular, especially at longer ranges.

Some people like a touch more feedback, it seems.

If it's during daylight hours and the explosions aren't damaging your property, there probably isn't anything you can do, legally.

Blowin stuff up safely is fun.

This guy got into some trouble for a super large tannerite explosion that caused a dump-truck box to fly.

77. Definitely tannerite

A few of my friends make it and go out to a far property outside of the city to shoot guns. Been a few times myself. It's a pretty decent explosion
