(326 posts)my kids are still there... DE figures kind of as a pass over for the storm, unless you're at the beach . . . my kids are in Newark and by the tracking maps they look to be on the edge of a direct hit . . . here's hoping not.
I really dislike this hype.
Projected landfall in Massachusetts at 2 AM. Boston has drizzle, slight breezes at 1:25 AM.

(1,933 posts)best luck to you, too! We may not be able to post at DU if Time Warner Cable goes out - no TV and no wireless at home.
High winds are expected here in western NY because Sandy will be combined with a storm to the west of us (so the weatherman said). We're prepared but hopeful we won't need all the supplies. I feel bad for the birds and animals that have to endure this without shelter.

(657 posts)I left after Wilma. Now I'm here in nj. What a bitch. I thought I would be safe here. No global warming. Almost Nov. and a hurricane hitting ny. I'm more scared here than I ever was in Fla. no shutters, wooden houses, and alot of people who have no idea what will happen. Thanks, am charging my phone so I can keep in touch with you all. I will need it.

I have been through several hurricanes. Know the feeling, the dread. Am keeping the vigil--many friends in the NY area--but just really for everybody.

(657 posts)I know to be prepared for anything. But seems so strange going thru it here. I expected snow storms here not hurricanes.

(910 posts)our vehicles away from them as far as possible. We have huge pine trees only 30 ft away from our house, I'm hoping wind blows them away from house not at it.

(9,760 posts)This is not going to be fun. We have one car in the garage, but it only holds one. We have the van up next to the house as close a possible, so at least one side of it is sheltered.
Living in the woods is lovely, usually, but in this extreme weather we've been having over the past few years, there are serious dangers. Best of luck to us all.

(28,347 posts)I checked Newsday a few hours ago and found that the area on Long Island we once lived in is under mandatory evacuation.
We had a canal out back and had minor flooding after Hurricane Isabelle. I believe that this storm, with it's extremely high winds would probably blow our old house down. Such a scary thought.
I hate the thought of anyone being in danger. Please stay safe, and I will help in any way I can.

(35,015 posts)I'm hoping it won't be as bad as the experts are predicting. Since the summer's been drier than normal summer up there, the ground should be able to handle a good bit of rain which will help with the trees. Good luck and again, stay safe!

(910 posts)so many big trees especially the huge pine trees so close to our house. Our ground is heavily woods with trees over 100ft and they still have leaves on.

gkhouston
(21,642 posts)And if you've got an ax, crowbar, etc., take them there with you. They won't do you any good out in the garage if part of the house collapses around you. If you've got duct tape and plastic sheeting (or even leaf bags) to cover up broken windows, etc., take that as well. Keep sturdy shoes with you.
The wind will likely sound terrible and the house will creak loudly, which is pretty damned scary, but the trees may be just fine. We'll be thinking about you.

(69,014 posts)Our garage is crowded. There's a lovingly tended Honda motorbike that is usually parked outside my mom's. When the college boy owner came by tonight with a tarp for it, we told him that if he could rearrange our trash cans, he was welcome to our garage for the duration. So he did. Better in the garage than through the living room window, we say.
Stay safe, everyone!

(211 posts)...in the form of a rare, cool, constant wind.
Bitterly ironic that Florida, of all places, gets the "nice" part of a hurricane while the worst moves up North. Something's definitely bizarre when we're getting hurricanes in New York and brisk winds in Florida, with tsunami and serious earth quakes scattered around the other two corners of the North American continent. All during the same ten or so days...and with a full moon prominent during Sandy's life time.
As someone with little spare money and less influence, the most I can do is wish you all well.

(9,791 posts)We're in the path of Sandy in NE PA but we're in pretty good shape. The generator is ready to go and we have a lot of extra fuel. It can power up all off our essentials including the well pump. We have plenty of food already prepared and more in the freezer if we need it.
My heart goes out to those who are on the coast and in low lying areas to the south and east of us. Here's hoping that Sandy will calm down a bit and defy the predictions.

My permanent residence is in heart of Gulf Coast, I don't think this storm looks all that bad. May be much ado about nothing....
Good luck all.
Waiting For Everyman
(9,385 posts)Probably the worst thing I'll have to deal with where I am is loss of power if it goes out. Last time we got lucky here and didn't lose it, so it seems about a 50/50 chance to me. Even if it goes, that isn't much compared to some.
I'm hoping those in flood areas or on the water, like my friends on Middle River, don't get hit as hard as Isabelle was here. Go away surge! turn east, out to sea!
A political note... Gov. O'Malley has cancelled early voting tomorrow, but has already said we'll be adding an extra day on Friday to make up for it, so that's good. He said we'll see about whether Tuesday's EV gets cancelled as it gets closer.
