More than two-dozen voters who recently re-reregistered as Republicans never gave permission for the switch, the Riverside-area voters told The Press-Enterprise.
From January through August, Republican registration in the county increased by almost 35,000 voters amid a paid push that wiped out a 15,000-voter Democratic advantage in the hotly contested 31st state Senate District. It also reduced Democratic margins in the overlapping 41st Congressional District and 61st Assembly District.
But voter interviews suggest that the per-registration bounty program, bankrolled by wealthy activists and large business interests, encouraged some signature gatherers to cut corners.

(57,936 posts)That is because the state primaries are open and the votes of Californians don't count for much in the federal primaries with maybe the exception of House or Senate seats and then very rarely.
The person assisting with the registration is not permitted to touch the party choice portion of the registration form and has to sign the form and give his/her address, telephone number and group affiliation.
Why would someone cheat in a situation like that?
There are enough Democrats to register. You just have to go where Democrats are.

(14,087 posts)people voted, and wha-la! Their candidate wins! They can justify the theft by saying "look how many republicans we have registered! Of course we won legitimately!"
They did this all through the bush years. They won't quit until there is a HUGE penalty with mandatory jail time for ANYONE caught gerrymandering ANY PART OF AN ELECTION.
It should be a sacred trust that our government protects us from these criminals.
