Atlanta hate radio station (WGST) bit the dust last month

Last edited Mon Oct 29, 2012, 12:14 AM - Edit history (1)

WXIA television in Atlanta reported on 9/28:

...Clear Channel-owned...WGST changed its format Friday afternoon. A number of staffers were laid off Wednesday afternoon. Friday afternoon at 3 pm, the station switched to an all-Spanish language sports format, with programming from ESPN Deportes.

According to several radio industry journals, Georgia News Network, a syndicated top-and-bottom of the hour statewide news service aired from the WGST newsroom, will be shuttered at the end of the year.

Wow. I wonder how many of the listeners of WGST called to complain: "WHAT ARE THEM ILLEGAL MEXICANS DOING ON MY STATION????"

640 WGST had the typical right wing fare of Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin, Michael Savage, and a local mindless right wing morning show. In fact, current national progressive talker Mike Malloy hosted a show in Limbaugh's timeslot on a rival station, 750 WSB, in the early 1990s.

As for WSB, Limbaugh moving to that station meant that nonpartisan consumer advocate Clark Howard would no longer be live on that station after nearly a decade so. Clark Howard moved to 8pm (now THAT should make compelling primetime radio programming?) WSB is nowadays nothing more than right wing junk after 8:30am (with Rush, Neal Boortz, and yes the misogynist pig RedState.com editor Erick Erickson hosting "Atlanta's Evening News"...seriously!)

(ETA) Atlanta now has a progressive station, 1010 WGUN, that carries: Warren Ballentine, Ed Schultz, Randi Rhodes, Thom Hartmann, and Mike Malloy.

folks just don't support them in this area. Thank the Internet for DU.

I think the local racist Neil boortz is on his way out. Got his start writing racist speeches for Georgia 's last openly racist gubnor.

The only one on that station that got ratings and mattered, rush, moved over to a bigger and more widely heard station in Atlanta WSB 750.
now get them off the air, a celebration would be in order.
