I am shattered. He was a shining light in my hunt for news because he was on our side and could be trusted. We were FB friends. That is where I'd go to find his articles; the first one I 'borrowed' I IM'ed him to let him know he had quite a following over here, providing a link for him. So at least he knew he had a cheering squad on DU.

Boehlert did a valuable service for all of us by pointing out media hypocrisy-I surely hope someone can pick up that mantle. His voice will surely be missed.

that you would have his columns posted without fail.

I will always envision his peacefulness, resting on his chair expressing love for his family and fireplace at Christmas with his sweet pup. I hope that is his forever. He just loved Christmastime.

I am from the Vietnam generation.

I have a friend who used to do dangerous things. Fly stunt planes. Race motorcycles. Race snowmobiles. Always always pushing the envelope.

I said to him one day, "Ralph" (not his real name). Why do you do these dangerous things? You have a wife and young kids!

He looked at me and told me this story. I went to Vietnam as part of a seven-man reconnaissance team. We were always behind enemy lines gathering data on our enemies. Seven of us went, and I was the only one to come home alive. He said I decided then when "GOD" decides it is your time, it IS your time. It doesn't matter if you are sitting in an easy chair in your living room or flying stunt planes.

At the time, I had a hard time understanding or accepting that rationale. But as I got older and saw good people doing great things yet suddenly dying at a young age, my thoughts have evolved. Now, with age, I find it harder to dispute his rationale.

Eric Boehlert is the latest good person dying too young, too suddenly.

I wish his family the best and hope they can find some peace.

I admit there are things I won't do because I find them scary or dangerous. Sometimes that fear is rational, sometimes not.

When my kids were in elementary school there was a young mom with two small children who went for a bike ride with her own mom. She was very cautious, always wore a helmet and followed the rules of the road. The accident was horrific. A truck's brakes failed, crossed the median. Her mother was untouched, but this young mom was killed instantly. Almost like it was "just her time". Our whole community was devastated.

I don't consider myself fatalistic, and I'm certainly not religious, but I believe we all have to live our lives with the full knowledge that sometimes bad things just happen to good people.

Eric Boehlert will be sorely missed. His insights were unique and valuable.

I, too, hope his family can find peace.
