PORTSMOUTH, Va. - The Coast Guard has responded to a distressed ship with 17 people aboard. The ship, the HMS Bounty, is about 90 miles southeast of Hatteras, N.C., 160 miles from Hurricane Sandy's center.
The owner of the ship called the Coast Guard late Sunday evening, saying that she had lost communication with the ship's crew late Sunday evening.
The Coast Guard also received a message from the Bounty, confirming their distress and position.
<snip>
The ship is reportedly taking on water and cannot move forward on its own.

Hopefully, they can ride it out or the CG can mount a rescue. Winds and sea are high.

(7,960 posts)I'm assuming she does not sail under true 18th century conditions. No radios. Hope they get through this.

(26,044 posts)It's the replica of the original Bounty built for the Marlon Brando film, and has been a well-known tourist attraction for decades. I'd hate to see it be lost.

(114,904 posts)but I have to say, I'm more concerned for those aboard as I'm sure you are too.

(423 posts)I guess there are two of them. I've been on the Mel Gibson one, it's a bit wider than the dimensions for the original Bounty to accommodate a film crew standing on deck.

(7,290 posts)I grew up in St. Petersburg, Florida, and the Bounty was moored there throughout my childhood. We used to take tours, and it was just a familiar sight to anyone that went downtown.
Small thing in the overall scheme of life, but a kick in the gut to see a childhood favorite endangered.

(72,377 posts)sorry to hear that the crew is in trouble!
Very sad to think she is probably unlikely to survive this storm. I never saw the original movie, but I have seen the "Pirates" movie she has been in since, and I love them.

(3,746 posts)The Coast Guard has received word that the crew of the HMS Bounty has abandoned ship approximately 90 miles southeast of Hatteras N.C., Monday.
The 17 person crew donned cold water survival suits and lifejackets before launching in two 25-man lifeboats with canopies.

(29,582 posts)There's Hatteras Village, on the southern tip of the island.
There's Hatteras Island, which is about 50 miles long.
Where the fuck is the ship?
Probably not in a good spot, even when conditions are tolerable.

Officials say a ship started taking on water off our coast and eventually sank, forcing the crew to abandon ship into 18-foot waves and 40 mile per hour winds off the North Carolina coast.
The HMS Bounty, a 180-foot, three-mast tall ship, was last marked about 90 miles southeast of Hatteras.
The ship has sunk, according to the Coast Guard at 8:45 a.m. Monday.
Just before 8 a.m., the Facebook page for the HMS Bounty says 14 of the 16 people who had to abandon their ship have been hoisted to safety.
There have been conflicting reports on how many people were onboard. The manifest reportedly listed 16 people, and that's the number the Coast Guard has.

Will wait to see what info is out there that we're not yet aware of but my thinking right now is that someone needs to be hauled to court over this mess.

(16,399 posts)The Bounty was docked near here in Fall River for many years. They could have come up here, they rode out more than a few similar storms to what we're gonna get here.

(12,392 posts)Many many years ago when we toured it, they were doing reconstruction on a section of it. As they were sawing and buffing, a chunk of the wood came flying through the air and bounced off my head. I picked it up and stuck it in my pocket. I've kept it all these years.

(28,876 posts)Went out to sea last week. Tried to sail around the storm and were surprised by its strength. Might seem foolish to not sail into port, but I imagine that type of ship can't be docked just anywhere.

(22,308 posts)That makes 16 not 17 so I am not really sure wtf is going on.
It does sound like 14 are safe.
