How come NY celebrates World Championships without drama?

(39,191 posts)Oh, and the Yankees have only won 2 titles in the new century...so they're not getting bashed for winning, because they're not. Deal with it.

(4,868 posts)And before someone returns with "27 World Series Wins", all that matters is this season. The Cardinals have eleven in a relatively tiny market, that's much more impressive.
People bash the Yankees because of their obnoxious fan base.

NY metropolitan area has at least two of every major sports teams, and that is just for starters.

(28,876 posts)Sorry, but NYC simply has a larger market per team. And let's not get started on standard of living and what people are able/willing to pay for tickets (also much higher in NYC).
The secret to their success is largely due to geography.
TomClash
(11,344 posts). . . for entertainment dollars is not simply limited to baseball.
Their success has to do with many things, not just "geography."
And I'm no Yankee fan.

(9,527 posts)None of the other New York based teams have been anywhere near as successful over such a long period of time. The Yankees have been willing to spend in recent years, but so have the Red Sox and that hasn't gotten them as many titles and this year's team was pretty bad from what I understand (I'm not a baseball fan but my boss was forlorn over the Red Sox this year).

(28,876 posts)...their farm teams. Which, ironically, also explains their current predicament of numerous overpaid, underperforming players. But being able to scoop up the best free agents and trade prospects worked well for them for many years.

(47,553 posts)Do you live in a city other than New York? Have you experienced Yankee fans at your ballpark? Same with Red Wings fans, and I hear its the same with Lakers fans. People don't hate those teams because they win. They hate them because they're dicks.

(14,910 posts)I get so verbally angry over the on base shots of Jeter chewing bubble gum.
Even something as innocent as chewing bubble gum is done with such arrogance and conceeded will.
Makes me want to puke every time.

(21,925 posts)Yogi Berra and Mickey Mantle were heroes. But when I moved to Oakland in the late 60s I became a big A's fan. When their dynasty in the early 70s came to an end because of free agency, it was the Yankees covetous ways that lured Reggie Jackson and Catfish Hunter away. Charlie Finley had a real eye for home-grown talent and building teams from scratch. George Steinbrenner's bank account had a real eye for store bought talent. It didn't help the Yankees' image that their owner from 1973 was a real abrasive dickhead who decided to try to buy his way to championships.

(33,688 posts)George Steinbrenner shuffled off this mortal coil. He was truly the Trump of the sports world - a self-aggrandizing blowhard who thought the rules applied to everybody but him. And Derek Jeter has way too much skill, dignity and class for any real baseball fan to dislike him. A-Rod is another story entirely. He's whiny, a post-season failure and an admitted cheater.
What is so frustrating is that the fans of most teams accept the up-and-down cycles of their teams as a part of the game. There are good years and bad years. We accept that. My Twins had a good decade for the most part but the last two years have been brutal. They will be good again. Yankees fans expect a World Series every year. They're like five-year-olds.

By BUYING the best team money could buy, every athlete in professional sports saw a way to get more money.
If a 2nd baseman makes x and is y important to a team, I am also y and deserve x too.
See how that worked?
So now I cannot afford a baseball game, football game with my kids.
Thanks georgie, you rich ahole.
