In Boston, the storm is basically a bad, windy rainstorm right now, although we got a gust around 3am that shook the house for 30 seconds and woke me right the hell up. The wind is supposed to pick up in a couple of hours and roar for the next 12, but really, we in Boston are only going to get nicked by this thing...but it's such a big goddam storm that "nicked" means near-hurricane gusts and driving rain until Tuesday.
So that's us. How's by you?
P.S. Power outage hint: if you think you're going to lose power at some point, crank your freezer to 11. If the power goes out, the freezer will hold the cold longer and keep your food from spoiling.

(46,114 posts)Dry, a little breeze of maybe 5 mph.
I'm dreading the likely one week plus w/o power.

(609 posts)Major ponding on the west side of our house. I tried to address the drainage situation before the storm, but ran out of time to finish. I'm going to try to direct the water away...
I won't be sleeping for the next 2 days.

(2,367 posts)here in northeastern CT. The generator is all ready to go. No worries here. I'm more concerned for my two kids who live in Brooklyn NY, one block from the manadatory evac area.

(22,913 posts)We are stocked up and ready, with food, ice, water, batteries, oil lamps etc. Nothing from Sandy has hit yet. Irene was really bad in the area where we live (Town of Shandaken) with areas of bad flooding from streams. Our home is on relatively high ground so that is not a concern for us personally, though our village we could get cut off if bridges get damaged. It will drive me crazy though if our power goes out and stays out through election day!

I just took my car over to the local hospital parking garage this morning and parked it inside so it's out of the path of any projectiles. It was cold, windy and raining as I walked back to my house.

(2,769 posts)Light rain, not particularly windy.
However, my neighborhood is one of those that loses power at the drop of a hat.
After Irene, we had no power for 5 days, and in desperation, we bought a generator. It's a godsend for running the fridge, a couple of lights and over-the-air TV. Saved us from going bonkers.

(21,789 posts)Hunkered down and ready. Main worry is losing power, but I've stuffed the refrigerator/freezer with ice packs and water in pint and quart containers. All items charged up as well.
Stay safe, everyone!

I'm right on the water, and keeping my eye on those waves. Luckily I'm about 20+ feet above sea level.

(9,874 posts)Most of Hoboken is below sea level so they expect a great deal of flooding there. My son lives there. For those unfamiliar, it is on the Jersey side of the Hudson River directly opposite the Battery (Wall Street).

(11,094 posts)No hype on our local tv station, just stern warnings to prepare and pay attention. No rain yet, sky darkening and wind picking up slightly.
I`m thinking of fellow Vermonters, especially those who went through Hurricane Irene and suffered such devastation. I`m also thinking about the animals....lots of cows, horses, sheep and alpacas out in pastures around here.
My best to all first responders and work crews. They`re doing a great job.
Best wishes to all DUers in the storm`s path. Stay safe.
