General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWOW. The new Romney ad that lies about Jeep and China is getting CREAMED by the press.
ESPECIALLY in car country. Just a sample.
Detroit Free Press: Not only was the story wrong, Romney took criticism for not knowing better and repeating it without questioning it.
Toledo Blade: The latest Romney ad, I will grant you, is a clever play on words to avoid saying things that are utterly false, Mr. Rattner said, referring to a new Romney ad out today. But he said the implication of the ad is just not true. Chrysler is adding people. It's made major investments in the Toledo Wrangler plant.
Huffington Post: Where the ad goes from misleading to something more nefarious is in the text it shows. At one point, it displays a line from a Bloomberg story stating that Chrysler "plans to return Jeep output to China," the implication being that the company is moving operations there as opposed to expanding operations that are already there.
Wall Street Journal: So far, the Romney campaign hasnt issued a public statement on the flap.
Sam Stein @samsteinhp i asked this morning and am still waiting this evening: anyone have a sound defense of this Romney Jeep ad?
Ron Fournier @ron_fournier Nope "@samsteinhp: i asked this morning and am still waiting this evening: anyone have a sound defense of this Romney Jeep ad?"
Ben White @morningmoneyben Wait, not only did Romney camp not back off the erroneous Jeep to China canard, they made an ad out of it? My god
Ben White @morningmoneyben @davidshepardson it's astonishingly misleading
Joe Vardon @joevardon Wait, Jeep isn't considering moving manufacturing to China? But Romney said in Ohio ... http://bit.ly/ScsbsY
McKay Coppins @mckaycoppins There's really no good explanation or excuse for it. Mitt Romney's Jeep ad is misleading. Full stop.
Tim Dickinson @7im"Jeep has no intention of shifting production of its Jeep models out of North America to China" http://on.freep.com/VRbWVD
Michael Cohen @speechboy71 The mendaciousness of Romney's new auto ad is breathtaking even for him: http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20121028/POLITICS01/210280314
Travis Waldron @Travis_Waldron Mitt can't tell the truth about GM/Chrysler, because the truth is simple: At every turn, he was wrong.
Sam Stein @samsteinhp The Romney campaign did defend the Jeep ad to me, by citing the Bloomberg piece that has been called wrong by Jeep http://huff.to/PAZCWY
Blake Hounshell @blakehounshell OK, @CitizenCohn has persuaded me: this is pretty despicable http://www.tnr.com/blog/plank/109256/romney-ohio-chrysler-jeep-china-toledo-obama-gm-rescue#
Andrew Kaczynski @BuzzFeedAndrew Interestingly, this Romney ad cites the Detroit News, which also debunked the Jeep production moving to China claim.
Josh Greenman @joshgreenman Who's acting desperate now? http://www.tnr.com/blog/plank/109256/romney-ohio-chrysler-jeep-china-toledo-obama-gm-rescue
Kurt Eichenwald @kurteichenwald Do GOPers believe Romney when he repeatedly says Chrysler' moving jeep job to china, when company says it's a lie? He'll say anything to win

(43 posts)This is right up there with Johnny Carson's exposure of Uri Geller as a fraud years ago on the Tonight Show. You can see the moment when Trump realizes where Letterman is going and clearly starts to squirm. Seconds later Dave plunges in the knife. The look on Trump's face is priceless. I've watched it over and over.

They also say the lies Rmoney are spewing about Chrysler are true because "they ARE going to build cars in China, right?"

(212 posts)The fact checking be done by the local press in those swing states, than by the national media. That way the lie will have a greater chance of being exposed to the folks who live in those states.

(31,706 posts)Willard's still playing the 50.1 game...find just enough white people to get to the polls while trying to suppress the blacks and other minorities. No better way to get your people "energized" than a good does of fear and poutrage. The great unhinged are at five-alarm shitstorm over anything and everything they can conjur up. Every problem in the world is President Obama's fault and if that means to lie...so be it. This is bloodsport and the Bishop needs to play whatever card he can in his vain attempt to bullshit his way to power.

(406 posts)Republicans have figured out that at this point they can say anything, it doesn't matter, their base will believe literally anything and what few independent voters that are left are complete morons. That being said, nice to see the media is at least doing its job.

(68 posts)I keep hearing/reading the beltway press yapping about those "still undecided voters", and I wonder just what those fringe dwellers need to know that they've not gotten already ? Lemme see ... which candidate likes my favorite jello flavor ?
My notion of the undecided voter is someone who hasn't tuned in very often, someone with very little knowledge of the candidates positions on important issues, they're records, etc., I think of undecided voters as people most sensitive to sound-bites and what they over hear around the workplace water cooler. Hey, Mitt Romney was a businessman, he knows how to create jobs, Obama hasn't done enough, blah, blah, blah ....
I don't buy the narrative of everything hendging on fringe dweller voters, and I'm not convinced there's a "horse race", close in some places yeah, but who is it that benefits most by selling a political horse race? TV stations selling ads to pay their bills, that's who.
Don't get me wrong, I do think the electorate can be fickle and there will be those who once they get to that voting booth will have certain urges overtake their reasoning ( race ? ) .... but I think for the most part the dye is cast.

(68 posts)As I see it, if someone who lives in a state that was devastated when the U.S. auto industry was on the edge of going into extinction until THIS president wasted no time taking steps that helped saved your state's economy, let alone the U.S. economy, but you're gonna vote for Romney anyway .... you have a habitual, knee-jerk voting brand problem. If you ALWAYS vote republican no matter what, and ... I'll say that same thing for anyone who votes blindly, you're someone willing to bite the hand that feeds you. OR ... your vote isn't for Romney as much as it's not a vote for president Obama, same thing.

(103,856 posts)Tell the big lie over and over and over.
MOST people never hear the retraction (if there is one), and by the time they have heard re-inforcing comments from media they "trust" and from their cohorts, they convince themselves that the lie is a fact..
republicans are BOLD and do not care about facts or nuance or any "gray area"..
It works for them often enough (see house of reps..and all the dem-turned-rep governorship), to keep doing it.
The prime example is the deification of Reagan (a mediocre president at best)

And when it's pointed out by the press I'm sure the next sentence is about how BOTH campaigns have degraded... etc. even though it's only one side making up this garbage.
An abomination against decency and humanity.
