Many homes are already flooding. Local TV is showing that we have reached to where Irene flooded to last year. Several blocks away from me the water has gone over the seawall, and onto the Belt Parkway. I am 75 feet above sea level sop I am fine. The rain and wind have calmed down at this point. The surge is really going to be bad tonight. We are expecting 10-12 feet tonight. Good luck to us all.

(42,239 posts)Low tide today in New York harbor is 2:59pm. The next high tide is then at 8:53pm. That high tide this evening, coinciding as it does with the storm's arrival, could cause significant flooding in extremely densely populated areas. If flood waters enter the subway the toll could be city-wide paralysis and billions of dollars in damage.

(21,977 posts)We had entire towns wiped off the map (Waveland, MS, e.g.). Of course, NYC wasn't paying attention for that.

The rest of us were watching helplessly and in horror. I say helplessly because the national guard was preventing rescuers from going in.
Yes, Katrina's storm surge was higher, but the Gulf Coast has higher sea walls and protection. NYC has only a 5' sea wall.

EVERYONE was paying attention (aside from Shrub and Michael Brown).
