Disaster aid, Mitt-style: Romney sending campaign bus for Hurricane Sandy relief

Disaster aid, Mitt-style: Romney sending campaign bus for Hurricane Sandy relief

by Laura Clawson

Mitt Romney faces a major challenge looking like he cares about or would, as president, respond effectively to a disaster like Hurricane Sandy, especially given that during the primaries he called disaster relief "immoral." So while President Barack Obama has left the campaign trail to coordinate emergency response, Romney is looking for a way to seem relevant and caring. And he's hit on ... sending his campaign bus to "help with disaster relief."

Romney was originally slated to campaign over the weekend in Virginia, but canceled plans there and joined running mate Paul Ryan in Ohio. Curt Cashour, Romney's Virginia communications director, tweeted Monday that the campaign bus will instead be used to transport basic supplies to local storm-relief centers.

The Romney campaign will also be collecting supplies at its offices in North Carolina, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania.

Because a campaign bus is just what emergency workers want to see coming down the road in the immediate aftermath of a disaster. And no doubt the Romney campaign will be distributing those supplies equally to the blue states that are projected to take the fiercest hit from Hurricane Sandy, right? Because I would totally make the trip to watch the Romney bus pulling up in Manhattan's Lower East Side sometime in the next couple days. I'm not too worried about having to make the trip, though.

The important thing to remember is that this isn't just Romney looking for a way to insert himself into the story of the day. This is a demonstration of what disaster relief would look like in a Romney presidency: minimally helpful acts of charity like a campaign bus with donated supplies would be his big emergency response plan after he dismantled FEMA.

On the campaign trail, Romney is being all pious about his concern for those in harm's way. But his plan as president would leave them in harm's way, and that's what matters.

Ann RMoney, who pretended to bake them, declared, "There is nothing like a frosted cupcake to take one's mind off total disaster."

Under her breath, she was heard to mutter, "Especially if it's loaded with Oxycontin."

What is the driver supposed to do? Just drive around and be visible while putting his or her life at risk so some rich prick can look like he cares, because his name is on the side of the bus?

Romney charges these folks outrageous fees for these supplies, along with a hefty delivery fee.

Nah, he's only in it to make a profit.
